Apple iPhone 14 Pro Dynamic Island

It’s been four months since Apple released the iPhone 14 Pro with the A16 Bionic chip. While the company already touted that this was the fastest smartphone available, a Geekbench score shows even the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is still behind Apple’s premium smartphone.

According to Compare Dial, the previous iPhone 13 generation also beats every Galaxy S22, or S23 released. For comparison, Galaxy S23 Ultra is 21.02% slower than the iPhone 14. It scores 1480 for single-core performance, while the iPhone 14 Pro clocks at a higher 1874.

In multi-core performance, Samsung’s new flagship is 14.86% slower than Apple’s iPhone, averaging at 4584 against 5384.

For Samsung users, on the other hand, the spec bump from Galaxy S22 Ultra to S23 Ultra is expressive, as the new model has boosted speeds by 59.83% in single-core performance and 57.47% for multi-core performance. That said, Apple will likely continue to differentiate from the competition when it introduces the iPhone 15 Pro later last year.

According to rumors, the next iPhone will use a 3nm process technology, meaning we’ll see a more expressive spec bump as the company still uses a similar 5nm process available with the iPhone 13’s A15 Bionic chip released in 2021.

The A17 Bionic processor is expected to be faster and 35% more power-efficient than its predecessor. With that, Apple will continue as the best chip maker in the smartphone industry.

Apart from the fastest chip, the iPhone 14 Pro models have a new design with the Dynamic Island cutout, integrating software and hardware in a seamless experience. This phone also introduces a 48MP main camera and larger sensors for better photos and videos in low-light conditions.

The iPhone 14 Pro also adds a new Cinematic Mode in 4K and Action Mode, which stabilizes a recording when you’re running or biking while filming.

      In real-world scenarios, both face images and videos may suffer from various types of degradation, such as downsampling, noise, blur, and compression. Blind Face Restoration (BFR) is a challenging task that aims to restore low-quality face images and videos that suffer from unknown degradation. Existing BFR methods have used facial priors such as reference prior, geometry prior, and generative prior in the network structure to perform restoration. However, they mostly focused on blind face image restoration (BFIR) with still images and have not been fully utilized for video restoration. 

      In this study, we present a new method called Stable Blind Face Video Restoration (StableBFVR). With StableBFVR, we have introduced temporal layers in the Stable Diffusion model that can preserve temporal consistency. The temporal layers are designed using two core technologies: Shift-Resblock that handles long-term information, and Nearby-Frame Attention that utilizes short-term information.       Multimodal emotion recognition, recently gaining popularity, is a study area that analyzes a variety of communication signals including images, voices, and text in a multilateral way. However, the list of large-scale multimodal datasets is very short and the available datasets have various limitations. Hence, Samsung R&D Institute Poland presents a new dataset for multimodal and multilingual emotion recognition: Samsung Multimodal and Multilingual Dataset for Emotion Recognition (SAESEMO).

      SAESEMO contains over 23,000 video scenes in 5 languages (Korean, English, German, Spanish, and Polish) collected from diverse sources. All video scenes are accompanied with rich metadata and emotion connotations collected manually. The study also analyzes balance and energy of audio features for the most important emotion classes and compares them with CMU-MOSEI data. Moreover, it carries out multimodal experiments for emotion recognition with SAESEMO and shows how to use a multilingual model to improve the detection of imbalanced classes.       Samsung Electronics today announced Samsung Hospitality TV compatibility with AirPlay, allowing hotel guests to connect their iOS and iPadOS devices to the TVs in their rooms easily and securely.
       
      Guests will be able to enjoy the convenience of watching their favorite shows and movies from popular streaming services, listening to personal playlists on various music platforms, viewing photos, practicing presentations, playing games and more on the TV in their room. By simply scanning a unique, on-screen QR code, guests can privately and securely connect their iPhone or iPad to the Samsung Hospitality TV.1
       
      Ensuring both convenience and robust security, no personal information is ever stored or saved and all information about paired devices is automatically erased upon guest checkout. This feature not only enhances the guest experience but also provides peace of mind regarding data privacy. Additionally, hotel managers and operators can easily update their management systems to enable AirPlay technology, simplifying the integration process.
       
      The integration of Apple AirPlay is part of Samsung’s broader strategy to enhance the in-room experience for hotel guests while providing powerful management tools for hotel operators. Samsung’s latest hospitality TVs include LYNK Cloud and SmartThings Pro for enhanced connectivity, seamless management and improved guest experience.

      After being announced during CES 2023, Samsung is about to start selling its Apple Studio Display competitor next month. The 27-inch ViewFinitiy S9 monitor features a 5K display with a 99% DCI-P3 and 218 PPI.
      With more saturated and vivid colors with crisper details, the Sout Korean company says this monitor offers “smart color calibration designed for creative professionals,” which is an industry first. “Users can conveniently customize the screen for precise settings without expensive, complex calibration equipment whenever they want. Using the SmartThings app, users can choose to calibrate in the Basic mode for a quick and easy adjustment of white balance and gamma setting, or they can use Professional mode for complete control of color temperature, luminance, color space, and gamma settings.”
      Users only need to point their smartphone camera at the monitor to calibrate the display. Once it’s done, they can view a report detailing the adjustments made and the Delta E color accuracy,
      Like Apple Studio Display, the ViewFinity S9 offers a matte option to limit light reflection and glare on the monitor. It has Thunderbolt 4 and Mini DisplayPort inputs and USB-c ones as well. The Thunderbolt 4 compatibility allows users to charge devices with up to 90W of power and transfer data reliably at speeds up to 40 Gbps.
      Unlike Apple Studio Display, which offers a 1080p webcam, this monitor comes equipped with a built-in 4K SlimFit camera that connects via a pogo pin without additional cables or equipment. Samsung says the camera delivers “crystal clear quality for video calls” on apps like Google Meet.
      What makes the ViewFinity S9 display unique is the ability to use Smart TV apps when you’re not using the monitor to work. A report says Apple is working on a similar approach with a future display, but the availability is still unclear.
      With so many similar features – with a few extra points – Samsung’s Apple Studio Display competitor will also be available for less than Apple’s option: $1,599.99 vs. $1,799. In addition, the South Korean company has a cheaper option, the Samsung M8 monitor, which launched in June.
