The concept of an outdoor TV may seem like an unfamiliar one, but demand for such solutions has increased a lot recently as more and more users look to expand their premium viewing experiences to outdoor environments. Particularly in North America, where a large portion of the population lives in stand-alone houses with areas for outdoor recreation, it is not uncommon to see outdoor TVs installed in spaces such as barbecue areas and terraces.

Starting with the release of The Serif in 2016, Samsung Electronics has been delivering televisions that closely reflect the lifestyles of its users. In May of 2020, Samsung’s first outdoor TV, The Terrace, was launched in the North American market (alongside The Terrace Soundbar) as part of the company’s expanding lifestyle TV portfolio.

According to market research publisher QY Research, the global numbers for outdoor TV sales – which stood at around 170,000 units in 2018 – are expected to hit 440,000 units by 2024.

But exactly how different is an outdoor TV from a regular television? Read on for Newsroom’s deep dive into the features and benefits of Samsung’s new The Terrace and The Terrace Soundbar offerings.

Clean, Sharp Picture Quality in a Range of Conditions

The-Terrace-Part1_main1.jpg

Walking the streets, it is not uncommon to see people shading their phones from the sunlight and struggling to make out what is on their screens. This happens when the brightness of the phone’s display is not high enough to counter the glare caused by the external light source, and is also an issue that affects outdoor TVs.

However, with The Terrace delivering an average brightness level of 2,000 nits (and a peak brightness level of 4,000 nits), users can comfortably view content even in broad daylight. With its QLED display, anti-reflection technology that eases glare and Adaptive Picture feature that automatically optimizes the display’s brightness according to the surrounding lighting conditions, both visibility and top-tier picture quality are ensured.

The-Terrace-Part1_main2.jpg

The Terrace is powered by Tizen, an open-source platform that allows content from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ to be streamed with vivid picture quality, regardless of which operating system is being used. This service additionally supports the Apple TV app1 and AirPlay 2.2 With built-in Wi-Fi and LAN, The Terrace can be used simply and conveniently without the need for additional purchases or connections.

There are a host of ways for users to enjoy mobile content on a large screen with The Terrace as well. For instance, Tap View feature allows what is displayed on the user’s Galaxy smartphone to be mirrored on their TV screen with a single tap. What’s more, Multi View feature allows the TV screen to play media from multiple sources, allowing users to watch TV on part of the screen while mirroring their phone screen on another part.

The-Terrace-Part1_main3.jpg

When it comes to a TV that is intended for use outdoors, resistance to rain, wind and dust is of high importance. The Terrace carries an IP55 certification from the International Electrotechnical Commission, meaning that it delivers reliable water and dust resistance, and ensures peace of mind for users whose televisions are subjected to adverse conditions. The IP Code rates the level of protection a product carries against the ingress of dust, water or contaminants, with IP55 meaning that the product is highly protected against dust and will work without fault in the rain.

Experience Deep, Rich Sound With The Terrace Soundbar

The-Terrace-Part1_main4.jpg

A TV designed for use outdoors must, by necessity, deliver sound differently from those that are used indoors. The Terrace Soundbar was built to accompany The Terrace television and provide rich sound to complete the premium viewing experience. Distortion Cancelling was applied to The Terrace Soundbar to enable it to deliver deep, powerful low-register output without the need for an accompanying subwoofer. A total of four woofers in The Terrace Soundbar create 210 watts of sound to enhance the sense of immersion for the viewer.

To add convenience to the viewing experience, both The Terrace and The Terrace Soundbar can be controlled by a single remote, which also features support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth®. What’s more, the Tap Sound feature allows users to enjoy music or sounds from their Galaxy smartphone on The Terrace soundbar with a single tap too. The Terrace Soundbar likewise carries IP55 dust and water protection to allow users to enjoy premium television audio in a broad range of conditions, worry-free.

According to its vision of ‘Screens Everywhere’, Samsung Electronics has been expanding into areas such as ultra-high definition, new form factors and new viewing spaces, and in the process charting new waters as far as the television viewing experience. We expect to see The Terrace make a mark as it stretches the home entertainment experience into the outdoor environment.

Samsung Electronics today announced the installation of its Outdoor LED Signage XHB Series (P8) at the flagship location of Shinsegae Department Store in Seoul, South Korea. Unveiled during the “2024 Lights Up SEOUL, KOREA” event today, the installation is set to establish Myeongdong Square in Seoul as Korea’s new premier landmark, featuring a stunning media lighting display that illuminates the heart of Seoul’s iconic shopping district.

“Our LED displays present unlimited possibilities for places like Myeongdong to bear new elements of cultural significance,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This installation gives us an opportunity to showcase in the biggest way possible that our outdoor digital displays are built to engage, built to deliver impactful content, and built to last.”

Located within the Myeongdong Special Tourist Zone Area, Shinsegae Department Store is uniquely positioned as a free outdoor advertising zone that enables creative and expansive installations. Samsung’s massive outdoor LED signage featuring an anamorphic 8K display, wraps around the entire outer wall of the building, measuring 71.8 meters in width and 17.9 meters in height — equivalent in size to three basketball courts.

Spanning a total area of 1,285 square meters, the display is designed for resilience in harsh weather, featuring an IP66 rating for dust and water resistance, and UL 48 and UL 746C certifications1 for year-round durability. The installation is engineered for high visibility and vibrant color accuracy, with support for HDR10+ technology to deliver sharp contrast and rich visuals. With a max brightness of 8,000 nits,2 the display ensures exceptional clarity even in direct sunlight. Its high refresh rate of 7,680Hz minimizes flicker and the moiré effect,3 ensuring a stable display that remains visually crisp, even through camera lenses.

Samsung’s track record of success with digital signage spans prominent venues worldwide. In South Korea, Samsung provided the country’s largest ever high-definition LED signage to Coex SM Town, while transformative installations at New York’s Citi Field and Houston’s Minute Maid Park set new standards for in-stadium displays. At Citi Field, Samsung installed the largest scoreboard in professional baseball, featuring over 29,800 square feet of LED screens that immerse fans in the action from every angle. Similarly, at Minute Maid Park, Samsung’s high-definition LED technology redefined the fan experience with massive outdoor displays and a dynamic new main scoreboard, all designed to enhance the excitement of the game.

In Myeongdong, the new installation will not only host engaging advertisements and dynamic video content, but also transform into a breathtaking annual Christmas media façade, creating a festive atmosphere for visitors.

“Shinsegae’s media façade, beloved by global customers for the past 10 years, has now been recreated as Shinsegae Square. This transformation paves the way for it to become an iconic landmark of Seoul, making it not only a must-visit attraction but also a central hub for K-culture. We are excited to partner with Samsung to bring our customers unique experiences that blend heritage and digital technology,” Shinsegae spokesperson said.

Samsung’s Outdoor LED Signage is renowned for exceptional performance in demanding environments, evidenced by award-winning deployments at iconic venues such as Inglewood, California’s SoFi Stadium, which boasts the world’s largest LED videoboard ever built for sports, and the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Samsung installed a 481-foot-long rooftop LED display in the shape of the F1 logo. As Myeongdong evolves into a global tourism destination, Samsung continues to lead with solutions that inspire and engage.

1 UL 48 and UL 746C certifications, issued by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), verify compliance with safety standards for electric signs and durability of materials in outdoor environments, including UV and weather resistance.
2 Maximum brightness measured post-calibration; actual values may vary with conditions.
3 The moiré effect is an undesirable visual phenomenon that occurs when repetitive patterns, such as lines, are captured in photographs.

Samsung Electronics renews its technological contribution for the Vatican with four outdoor LED signages (XHB series, two measuring 7.935m x 4.83m and two measuring 5.865m x 3.105m) and Harman Kardon embedded audio for St. Peter’s Square. This installation follows the previous collaboration in 2020, where two indoor displays were installed in the Nervi Auditorium to help more visitors take part in the ceremonies.

▲ Four Samsung outdoor LED signage (XHB series) have been installed in the St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican City

St. Peter’s Square, founded on an architectural layout boasting illustrious signatures and timeless pieces of art, hosts various ceremonies where the Pope meets the public. Acknowledging the requirements for the best acoustic and visual rendering in an outdoor space, Samsung took to its outdoors audio-and-video expertise. The four outdoor LED signages have been installed in strategic points of the square to convey a clear picture of commencing events as well as audio solutions to broadcast the message.

▲ Visitors and worshippers can clearly view the proceedings through Samsung’s outdoor LED signage (XHB series) at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City

Thanks to Samsung’s LED Signage technology, spectators will be able to take part in the ceremonies at St. Peter’s Square and admire all the details. Being IP66-certified, the XHB series reproduce high-impact content even in harsh weather conditions. In addition, the extremely compact 99.4 mm-thin housing makes them perfectly integrable in an iconic space such as St. Peter’s Square.

Harman Kardon’s signature audio provides balanced panoramic sound that is distributed throughout the space, conveying crisp dialogues for an immersive and engaging experience for worshippers and visitors alike. Adaptive Sound technology clearly diffuses sound even when the volume of voices is low to divulge every element of speech, even during the most whispered dialogues.

“We at Samsung Electronics are excited to make our technological contribution and renew our engagement with Vatican City,” said Davide Corte, Head of IT Division, Samsung Electronics Italy. “The outdoor LED signages and audio solutions create an immersive audio and video experience to serve visitors as well as the communities of the Faithful. It is an honor for us to be present with the best of our technologies in such a unique and prestigious setting such as St. Peter’s Square.”

Unveiled for the first time at the Mets’ What’s New at Citi Field event on March 23, attendees had a sneak peek of what fans can expect for the upcoming season. The scoreboard is the highlight of the multiple digital display upgrades throughout the entire stadium, providing fans with a state-of-the-art display experience. Even as fans enjoy the new experienced introduced throughout the ballpark, the new scoreboard ensures that they won’t miss a moment of the action taking place on the field.

“As an emerging New York landmark, Citi Field continues to set itself apart with the integration of cutting-edge display technology that enhances the in-stadium experience for fans,” said James Fishler, Senior Vice President, Display and Home Entertainment Division, Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung is a proud partner of the Mets and with the installment of the first-of-its-kind, double-sided LED display, we are excited to help the franchise reach the next level of technology innovation in professional sports.”

New Centerfield Scoreboard Brings Citi Field to Life
Since forming its partnership in 2021, Samsung has worked with the Mets to transform Citi Field into the most technologically advanced, professional ballpark. The multi-year digital transformation included the deployment of over 1,300 LFD displays and several new Outdoor LED displays last year, totaling over 15 million pixels. The second phase of installments, which will be fully operational by opening day on April 6, will feature several new outfield displays, including the new centerfield scoreboard, increasing the total pixel count in Citi Field to 40 million. In addition to the centerfield scoreboard, Mets fans will see display improvements in all corners of the stadium, including exterior signage, digital concession menu boards and more.

“Samsung’s innovative technology at Citi Field will expand the standard for what fans expect when entering the country’s best stadiums. Over a two-year period, we’ve transformed a once static signage environment to an all-digital experience,” said David Phelps, Vice President, Product Management, Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. “While working with the Mets, we’ve been able to push the boundaries of what is possible by delivering more creative and unique experiences for its fan base.”

The new LED technology also enables opportunities for DOOH (Digital Out-of-Home) advertising by transforming once static displays into a blank canvas of creativity. The scoreboard offers near unlimited configurations for advertisers to stand out from the competition and deliver entirely new visual experiences to fans. With the ability to accept multiple forms of content, the dynamic display helps foster the local economy by providing business owners with an affordable solution to advertise at Citi Field. The back of the dual-sided scoreboard reaches heights so tall that it’s visible from the highway, offering yet another opportunity to increase sponsorship and advertisement revenue, as well as inform and excite fans waiting to enter the stadium to join the action.

      Immersive Entertainment for Every Fan
Citi Field’s main video LED board is substantially the largest scoreboard across all professional ballparks and over three times larger than Citi Field’s previous centerfield scoreboard. The expansive 17,400 square-foot high-definition video display ensures that no matter where fans are in the stadium, they won’t miss the action on or off the field. Including the new enhanced display on the back, the centerfield scoreboard features over 24,000 square feet of LED signage and over 13 million pixels, along with a high-resolution, 10mm pixel pitch display to enhance the in-stadium fan experience. Teams in the dugouts and fans in the stands alike can watch 4K instant replays, up-close game action, game stats, interactive updates and more.

“Samsung’s state-of-the-art technology upgrades at Citi Field underscore our goal of providing best-in-class experiences for our fans,” said Mark Brubaker, Chief Technology Officer, New York Mets. “The quality of these enhancements will not only provide our fans with more immersive and memorable visits to the ballpark, but it also positions Citi Field as a trailblazer in the industry.”

The iconic ballpark’s digital transformation demonstrates how today’s display technology can seamlessly integrate into stadiums and introduce unique interactive offerings for fans. Built for the future, Samsung’s technology upgrades to Citi Field create an interactive environment for all generations of baseball fans traveling to the ballpark.

In recent times, we’ve all been spending more and more time at home – a routine change that has meant finding fun alternatives to our usual outdoor activities, including making use of our balconies or gardens.

For those who are looking to make the most out of this at-home outdoor lifestyle, Samsung Electronics last May introduced The Terrace, an outdoor TV that can be placed and used outside, along with The Terrace Soundbar.

As well as providing resilient versatility thanks to its water and dust resistance, The Terrace features a vivid screen for excellent viewing experiences. Read on for a look at a day in the life of The Terrace at home.

Enjoying Your Swim With Your Favorite Media, Worry-Free

One of the best ways to stay cool on warmer days is to set up a small pool in the garden for yourself or your children. With other TVs, if you wanted to enjoy your TV while cooling off, the pool would need to be placed far away from the TV to prevent water damage.

However, with The Terrace, you can place your TV anywhere you want without having to worry about any splashing affecting it as the outdoor TV has obtained the IP55 certification from the International Electrotechnical Commission for water and dust resistance. What’s more, The Terrace can withstand all kinds of weather conditions, even extreme ones that dip as low as negative 31° to 50° Celsius (~negative 24° to 122° Fahrenheit). Thanks to this durability, you can stream your favorite TV show while relaxing, or put on your kids’ favorite animated show while they enjoy the pool.

For those users looking for a summery soundtrack to accompany their pool day, they can take advantage of the rich sound experiences offered by The Terrace Soundbar. Offering 210 watts of sound featuring deep bass tones of the built-in woofer and cutting-edge wide range tweeter, you can enjoy the same sound quality as if you were listening indoors.

To make things even more convenient for your at-home poolside fun, all you need to do when playing music through the Soundbar is tap your smartphone onto it in order to connect and play your chosen music instantly.

Sharp Picture Quality, Even When the Sun Is Out

After a few hours of fun in the sun, it’s time to eat – and back-garden cookouts serve as a fun and easy way to recreate the camping experience at home. While you might be wondering how The Terrace can keep everyone entertained under the bright sun while the food is cooking, the TV in fact features bright picture quality and sharp dark color contrast, making it easy to enjoy a movie even under direct sunlight.

The Terrace features a peak brightness of over 4,000 nits and 2,000 nits on average so that users can comfortably enjoy video content even in the middle of the day. Furthermore, The Terrace features high visibility thanks to its anti-reflection technology, which reduces the reflection of light off of its surface, and AI picture quality optimization technology that adjusts the screen’s brightness automatically based on changing light conditions.

Thanks to The Terrace’s Tizen OS, you can choose from a wide range of popular TV shows and movies when looking to relax in the garden without needing to connect a separate OTT device by merit of the smart features the Tizen engine offers.

Take Your Outdoor Games to the Next Level

There’s nothing better than relaxing outside and partaking in a game or two while the weather is still nice after a good meal in the garden – and with The Terrace, you can even enjoy your favorite digital games while still making the most of the weather.

The Terrace is the perfect screen on which to easily play games outside, as the TV optimizes its sound and screen levels for your game without you needing to adjust any settings manually. Featuring a motion clarity feature, screen tearing is minimized while playing, making for more seamless and enjoyable experiences.

Taking a Trip Down Memory Lane With a Single Tap

At the end of a long day enjoying each other’s company, it’s time for the family to get together and take a look back over some precious memories. Thanks to The Terrace’s Tap View1 feature, all you need do is gently tap your smartphone to the side of the TV to share your media on-screen and get straight into reminiscing. Not only does this make it more comfortable for everyone, as there’s no need to crowd around a single smartphone screen, but it also lets you make the most of your photos on the intricate big screen.

The Terrace also comes with the Multi View2 feature, which lets you split the TV screen to enjoy multifarious contents at once. This lets you take a look over some past vacation photos on one side of the screen while catching up on your favorite TV series on the other, for example; the possibilities are endless.

It was only in the very recent past that we believed personal TVs were limited to the indoor space only. With The Terrace, users can expand the uses of their TV for all kinds of fun activities; why not watch a movie while grilling on the barbeque, listen to music while relaxing in the cool breeze, or enjoy the sunset with a family slideshow? The Terrace and The Terrace Soundbar lets you take your private outdoor experiences to the next level.

Samsung Electronics today announced that all models1 of The Terrace TV, the premium product line designed for outdoor lifestyles, have become the first in the TV industry to be verified for outdoor visibility performance.

This verification comes from U.S.-based Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a global independent safety science organization with over a century of experience in driving safety solution innovation.

In normal outdoor settings, consumers must find means to block sunlight to gain appropriate visibility, which has been a major issue across a relevant product category. To receive this verification, a product must undergo several rounds of rigorous testing process, in which peak brightness of over 3,000 ~ 4,000 nits,2 a higher contrast ratio of over 1,000:1, and color volume greater than 80 percent should be altogether achieved under over 10,000 LUX condition. The Terrace TV has displayed outstanding performance in these three key areas so viewers can enjoy clear, vivid images even in bright outdoors.

It also features Samsung’s premium QLED display, anti-reflection technology which reduces light reflection from its surface, as well as AI picture quality optimization technology for automatic brightness adjustment.

In addition to The Terrace, OH551, the outdoor signage product from OHA Series which uses the same technologies for commercial use from the company, also received visibility verification.

Samsung also recognizes the importance of weather resistance quality against rain and dust for outdoor TV set models. The company obtained IP55 water and dust resistance standard certification from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which together with the latest UL verification will play a pivotal role in fortifying Samsung’s efforts to provide optimal viewing experience in various outdoor conditions.

“UL’s outdoor visibility verification for The Terrace will enable consumers across the globe to further add values to their viewing experiences,” said Yong Hoon Choi, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “As a leader in the TV industry, Samsung will continue to drive innovative technologies that are optimized for new and emerging lifestyles.”
