We once looked on wearables as the future, but now that they’re actually here, we haven’t been quite as enthused. Things started off well with various smartwatches from a variety of OEMs, but one-by-one those companies are either pulling out of the smartwatch market temporarily, shifting focus to other platforms or form factors, or closing their doors entirely. However, there is still hope.

We’ve long recommended Google’s Android Wear as one of the best wearable platforms, but sometimes it’s easy to forget it’s not the only one, nor is it for everyone. I’m here to tell you that Samsung’s Tizen has quietly grown into a fantastic option. Last year we saw it make a splash with the unique Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, but this year, we have the Gear S3 and, spoiler alert, it’s fantastic…

THE HARDWARE |

Just like on the Gear S2, Samsung has thankfully opted for a circular display on the Gear S3, and it has a fantastic design overall. Also like its predecessor, it comes in two models, the Gear S3 Frontier and the Gear S3 Classic.

Frontier or Classic?

I spent my time with the Gear S3 Frontier and personally speaking, it’s exactly what I love in a watch. It looks rugged, yet a little fancy at the same time. The charcoal color and subtle grooves along the bezel give this the look of a classic watch.

However, if you’re looking for something a bit classier, the Gear S3 Classic is the better bet. It has a polished stainless steel design which also looks wonderful, and even better, it ships with a leather band instead of the silicone one the Frontier comes with.

Regardless, the build on both of these smartwatches is nothing short of excellent. The stainless steel body is hefty and feels durable, all while looking like a premium device.

Size & Thickness

However, both variants of the Gear S3 have two aspects that not everyone will love — they are both thick and big. These aren’t outrageously large devices, but compared to the Gear S2 or most Android Wear devices, they are fairly big. If you have small wrists, this may not be the watch for you. But beyond that, I found the thickness to be of even bigger concern. It was tough to fit the watch under a shirt cuff or even a jacket, and the LTE variants would be even worse.

That Bezel (And Buttons Too)

The big story with the Gear S3, of course, is the bezel. Compared to other smartwatches, this is where Samsung’s options stand out. The rotating bezel on the Gear S3 provides an excellent experience when it comes to navigation, offering an intuitive and tactile way to interact with the software on your device. You can still interact with the touch screen to control most of the experience, but the addition of the bezel and two buttons make the experience that much better.

Band

As for the band, the Gear S3 Frontier comes with a thick silicone band which is black and has a slight texture to the outside. It looks good and feels pretty decent as well, but it’s not a premium band by any measurement. I wouldn’t really hesitate to toss a leather or metal band on this watch. Luckily, that’s pretty easy with the standard 22mm size and quick release latch.

THE SOFTWARE |

As for its software, the Gear S3 comes with Samsung’s in-house Tizen operating system. Despite that, it works with almost any Android powered smartphone, and believe it or not, Samsung has done an absolutely fantastic job crafting this wearable OS.

This Just Makes Sense

The Gear S3 has a circular display, but it’s not the only wearable to have one. Many Android Wear devices also use circular display, but they’re never felt truly optimized for that form factor. The Gear S3, on the other hand, has software that makes sense. There’s certainly a lot different about Tizen compared to Android Wear or Pebble, so there’s a definite learning curve. However, everything on this watch makes sense.

gears3_tizen_1

From the watchface, there are a few actions to get to various areas of the interface. Rotating the bezel (or swiping) to the left reveals your notifications in the order they arrived. A swipe up on that notification removes it from the carousel and tapping it reveals the full text as well as several actions such as “open on phone.” Going to the right, you’ll find various customizable widgets. On my Gear S3 I have widgets such as weather, steps, calories burned, heart rate monitor, calendar, music controls, and more.

To go back, you hit the top button. Once back on the watchface, there are two other actions available. The first is the app drawer. From here you can view all of your apps in a customizable order. Navigating the apps is as simple as rotating the bezel to select the app of your choice and tapping the name to open the app. The other action from the homescreen is long-pressing the top button. This opens Samsung Pay, which we’ll get to in a moment.

Another small note I need to make on the software is about the input methods. Not only do you have voice replies, but there are also canned messages, emojis, drawing replies, and even a full keyboard (or a T9). It all works well and really comes in handy at times.

Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay is easily the standout feature of the Gear S3. Just like on recent Samsung smartphones, Samsung Pay on the Gear S3 is a mobile payments service which matches Google’s Android Pay and Apple’s Apple Pay systems beat for beat with full NFC compatibility. However, Samsung Pay’s big advantage is using MST technology to “trick” standard card readers into thinking you’re using a standard card. The tech is ridiculously cool, and easily a selling point for the device, but it’s not alwaysreliable.

Following the setup process, which can be a pain depending on your bank, I used Samsung Pay on Gear S3 about 5 times over the course of a few days. During that time, I only got it to work 3 times. What was the issue? I’m not entirely sure. The card reader recognized the watch each and every time, MST or NFC, but in certain stores, it would be declined. From what I can tell, this was an issue related to my bank as many other Gear S3 users report much better success rates on their devices.

samsung_gear_s3_3

Best of all, though, Samsung Pay on the Gear S3 works on any Android smartphone — not just Samsung devices. Last year’s Gear S2 packs the same Samsung Pay functionality, but there it’s limited to Samsung smartphones. Needless to say, this is a massive selling point for the watch, at least in my opinion.

The Setup Process

Another thing worth noting on the Gear S3 is the setup process. If you’ve got a Samsung smartphone, you won’t have any issues here as all of the needed components are built into the OS. However, if you’re like me and have this connected to another Android device, in my case the Pixel XL, you’ll need to install all of those components. That’s expected for any wearable, but on the Gear S3, it requires far more apps.

During setup I actually lost count of how many apps the watch needed to function. You’ll start with the Gear Manager which will prompt the installation of 3-4 other apps from the Play Store. During the setup process, the app will also download a couple of apps, including Samsung Pay, directly through the Gear Manager app rather than the Play Store. Luckily most of these apps won’t appear in your app drawer, but it’s certainly annoying to have to install so many apps just to use your watch. Samsung really needs to consolidate this.

samsung_gear_s3_8

The App Gap is Real

The Gear S3’s software is great, but there’s a definite app gap on the Tizen platform compared to Android Wear or even the now-defunct Pebble. Many of the most popular apps aren’t supported yet, the watchface selection is pretty minimal and won’t suit everyone’s tastes, and exploring Samsung’s app store isn’t a great experience. It’s pretty difficult to find some apps, and it’s even worse when you’re looking for watchfaces. I found myself mainly sticking to Samsung’s built-in watchfaces on the Gear S3.

However, that’s not to say things aren’t improving. Tizen is slowly adopting new wearable apps, like Spotify, which will help the experience on the Gear S3 as a whole. Some well-known Android Wear watchfaces are also making their way over, such as Facer.

samsung_gear_s3_11

Reliability & Performance

Another area the Gear S3 shines in is where reliability and performance are concerned. Never while I was wearing this watch did I have issues with the connection to my smartphone, nor did I miss any notifications due to the software — only due to the vibrations being a tad light.

Performance on the Gear S3 is also stellar. Never on this watch did I notice dips in performance, even when playing some of the games available for it or while using third-party apps. I’ve never had good luck with watches like this, especially on Android Wear, where things would lag and stutter constantly, so I was very pleased with Samsung’s efforts.

Health Features

Already, the Gear S3 wears many hats. It’s a smartwatch, a mobile payments system, and if you’ve got the LTE version, a full-fledged smartphone. However, it’s also a fitness tracker if you want it to be — and it’s a very good one.

samsung_gear_s3_1

The Gear S3 is absolutely packed with outdoor sensors and health features. The S Health suite enables the ability to track things such as calories burned, steps taken, floors climbed, specific workouts (such as a walk, run, or 14 other types of workouts), heart rate, and water/caffeine intake. It’s a generous suite, and everything works relatively well. I’m not someone who works out a ton, but I do take walks or quick runs from time to time, and the Gear S3 made it super easy to keep tabs on how far I’d gone and how many calories I had burned. The watch also has “nudges” that will remind you if you haven’t been active for a while.

BATTERY LIFE |

As for battery life, the Gear S3 goes a little above and beyond compared to other smartwatches. Samsung claims a ridiculous 4 days on a charge, but for the most part, I found myself getting about 2 days on a single charge. That’s with notifications coming in pretty regularly and the always-on display turned on. With that feature turned off, I could squeeze a little under 3 days out of the watch.

Charging

When it comes to charging, Samsung has yet again opted for wireless charging with an included magnetic dock. It works great, the dock allows you to use the watch as a bedside clock, and charging is pretty quick too. Unfortunately, Samsung has changed something in the Gear S3 to where standard wireless charging pads don’t work as they did on the S2. That’s unfortunate because it means you’ll be required to bring the included charger, or a spare, with you on trips.

samsung_gear_s3_2

FINAL THOUGHTS

When it comes down to it, the Gear S3 is a fantastic smartwatch, and there aren’t strings attached to that. Sure, it’s a little big, but if you can handle a semi-large watch, you’ll love the Gear S3. The software is excellent, the hardware is wonderful, and this watch has just about anything and everything you’d want from a wearable. It has a ton of roles to fill, but it fills each and everyone one of them nearly perfectly.

samsung_gear_s3_9

Greatness Comes at a Price

However, this fantastic smartwatch comes with a pretty hefty price tag. You’ll be paying $349 for either the Classic or the Frontier, and more if you grab an LTE version (outside of subsidies or payment plans). That LTE version is available from carriers, but also requires a $5-$10 data plan alongside it. The $349 Bluetooth version, though, is well within the range of most other premium smartwatches, it’s just not the bargain some others may be. Whether or not you’re willing to pay for that is up to you, but I certainly plan to…

Samsung Electronics’ The Premiere is back and more powerful than ever, after revolutionizing the premium projector market with its 2020 debut. Apart from its celebrated home cinema capabilities, The Premiere lineup has been enhanced with an array of new lifestyle features to broaden functionality beyond mere video viewing.

Samsung Newsroom met with developers Jaeyoung Park, Seonbin Jang and Jonguk Shin from the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics to discuss The Premiere’s new features and next steps for the projector.

▲ (From left) Jaeyoung Park, Seonbin Jang and Jonguk Shin

Ultra-Short Throw: Embracing a New Era of Home Cinema
Within a year of its launch in 2020, The Premiere ascended to the top of the premium projector market in North America — achieving this feat by delivering an unparalleled home cinema experience to users.

The true value of The Premiere’s home cinema features became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people stayed at home, the online streaming industry expanded and brought projectors into the spotlight. The ultra-short throw projector segment, a category that includes The Premiere, represented just 7.2%1 of the premium home cinema projector market in 2019. However, following the pandemic, this share grew to 22.5% by 2023.

      ▲ The Premiere 9

The Premiere’s biggest advantage lies in its convenience. Utilizing ultra-short throw technology with an aspherical mirror, the projector eliminates the need for ceiling mounts or a separate shelf to achieve an optimal projection distance. Users can simply place The Premiere directly in front of the desired wall, much like a TV, and screen adjustments can be made effortlessly via a remote control or mobile device. The Premiere 9 and The Premiere 7 are ideal for creating a personal movie theater, offering immersive screen sizes of up to 130 and 120 inches, respectively.

Color Wheel: Rotates rapidly in sync with the video signal to ensure images display the correct colors. Typically features 3 to 8 color sections.
Digital Micromirror Device (DMD): Precisely adjusts millions of tiny mirrors mounted on a microchip according to the video signal. This part is crucial in creating high image quality and resolution on projectors.
Triple Laser Technology: Fires lasers of the three primary colors of light — red, green and blue — to produce bright, sharp images. Contributes to brighter projections by reducing light loss in steps such as the color wheel.
Aspherical Mirror: Allows for ultra-short throw projection. Following numerous simulations, Samsung engineers came up with the optimal curvature and applied it to the new The Premiere projector.
▲ A simplified conceptualization of two major Digital Light Processing (DLP) beam projector types

“The remarkable thing about ultra-short throw projectors is their ability to create a large screen with minimal space between the device and wall,” said Shin, who led development for The Premiere. “The Premiere 9, for instance, creates a 100-inch screen with just 9.4 inches of space between the wall and device.”

▲ The Premiere 9 can project screens up to 130 inches. (Note: Screen sizes in column A measured diagonally, not vertically)

“Home cinema projectors are all about delivering the best possible screen experience within a given space.”
      – Jonguk Shin, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics

Upgrading With a Focus on Lifestyle
Following a successful debut, the team wanted more. They were resolute in transforming The Premiere into a comprehensive lifestyle product with value extending beyond home cinema.

“Our goal was to offer a wider range of use for The Premiere users,” explained Jang, who led product planning for The Premiere.

▲ Customize your space and set the right mood by projecting photos, color effects, background scenes and themes on your wall with The Premiere.

Custom Ambient, one of the newly added features, allows users to freely edit photos and videos through the SmartThings app on their smartphone and project them onto the wall. Users can even place widgets like a real-time clock onto the wall for everyday décor or use an animated effect like waves to make a splash during a party.

“Custom Ambient draws inspiration from The Freestyle’s Ambient Mode which is frequently used to upload social media posts,” he continued. “With The Premiere, users can create their own personalized space, even when they’re not watching videos.”

▲ Jaeyoung Park discusses The Premiere’s new lifestyle features of The Premiere.

Now with Samsung Gaming Hub installed, the projector’s entertainment capabilities have been significantly enhanced. Users can enjoy games from the cloud on the big screen without connecting a PC or gaming console. Of course, there are also plenty of HDMI slots (three) for those who want to connect PCs or gaming consoles, too.

“I often play racing games with my kids at home, and The Premiere’s 100-inch screen is perfect for the four of us to play on via split-screen without feeling cramped,” said Park.

▲ There are notable aesthetic differences between the first (left in each picture) and new (right) versions of The Premiere. The 2024 version features a more compact front with a warmer shade of Kvadrat fabric to better match home décor.

When turned off, The Premiere can also function as a smart speaker.

“The Premiere 9 features a built-in 40W 2.2.2 channel up-firing speaker that delivers powerful sound,” he added. “The Premiere 9 features front-firing units like a soundbar along with ample space for audio to resonate for deeper, richer acoustics compared to other form factors. Bixby can help users to enjoy immersive audio without turning on the screen with voice commands to stream music or launch podcast apps.”

      Brighter With Advanced Laser Technology
Unlike TVs in which users view light directly from the panel, projectors reflect light off the projection surface. As a result, the right components and software technology are necessary to achieving high image quality. Advanced laser technology also contributes to The Premiere’s large crystal-clear screen. The Premiere 9 utilizes triple laser technology, leveraging laser light sources from the three primary colors red, green and blue. In contrast, The Premiere 7 employs single laser technology with a blue light source, supporting a wider color gamut and higher color accuracy compared to lamp-based or LED projectors.

The Premiere 9 and The Premiere 7 deliver up to 154% and 100% of the DCI-P32 color gamut, respectively, and both models support HDR10+ to ensure crisp, vibrant images even in bright environments.

▲ The Premiere 9 features triple laser technology for brighter, sharper images.

Another key strength of The Premiere lineup is the abundant brightness offered.

“The Premiere 9 delivers a peak brightness of up to 3,450 ISO lumens3 with triple laser technology, while The Premiere 7 offers up to 2,500 ISO lumens with single laser technology,” said Shin. “The higher maximum brightness provides clearer picture quality and a more comfortable viewing experience compared to previous models. The laser light source also boasts a long lifespan and consumes less power than traditional lamp-based projectors. In other words, maintenance costs may actually be lower.”

      Smarter, AI-Powered Home Cinema
Despite its numerous usability features, the essence of The Premiere remains centered on watching videos.

“In an internal survey of The Premiere users, 90% of respondents indicated that they purchased the device to watch movies,” said Jang.

“Samsung’s robust hardware and AI technology, long recognized as No. 1 in TVs, have enhanced the picture and sound quality of The Premiere.”
      – Jaeyoung Park, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics

To deliver a premium home cinema experience, the developers focused on elevating picture and sound quality. Automation through AI technology was key. With 4K AI Upscaling, The Premiere delivers vibrant 4K resolution and significant improvements in picture quality. The Vision Booster leverages a light sensor to automatically detect and adjust ambient brightness in real time and calibrate color and contrast using an algorithm for optimal picture quality.

“The Premiere is smarter than ever before,” said Park. “Samsung’s robust hardware and AI technology, long recognized as No. 1 in TVs, have enhanced the picture and sound quality of The Premiere.”

▲ Jonguk Shin explains the advantages of ultra-short throw technology.

While Samsung has retained the acclaimed built-in speakers from The Premiere’s predecessor, the 2024 lineup has introduced a variety of new AI features for audio as well. In addition to Dolby Atmos technology, an essential for immersive movie-watching, several AI-driven sound technologies have been incorporated including:

Active Voice Amplifier (AVA) Pro, a feature that distinguishes voices from ambient noise and adjusts the voice volume accordingly. Object Tracking Sound (OTS), a feature that synchronizes sound with movements on screen. Adaptive Sound, a feature that automatically optimizes audio based on the surrounding environment.
Additionally, Q-Symphony allows users to connect wireless speakers for a more holistic listening experience.

▲ The Premiere projectors feature a minimalist, warm white design with rounded edges and a premium fabric finish from Kvadrat, a Danish textile design company that seamlessly blends in with any home decor. In the back, there is a Digital Audio Out (Optical) port and three HDMI ports, a LAN port as well as ex-Link and IR ports for better remote control

Transcending the Limits of Space for Immersion
What started as a movie projector for theaters, the modern projector has thrived due to its unique ability to transcend space — overcoming the physical constraints of screen size and location. Now, the advent of ultra-short throw technology has significantly mitigated the issues of space and passer-by shadows traditionally associated with beam projectors.

▲ Seonbin Jang describes the appeal of projectors.

As The Premiere continues to lead the way in the premium home projector market, what is next for this innovative device?

“Our goal is to seamlessly integrate projector screens to more spaces, such as walls and ceilings in homes,” said Park.

“The unique beauty of projectors is their ability to project beyond the physical confines of frame,” Jang reiterated. “In the future, we hope to evolve this into a spatial display that transcends the limitations of projection space — ultimately achieving a truly immersive screen experience, everywhere and anywhere.”

“Home cinema projectors are all about delivering the best possible screen experience within a given space,” concluded Shin. “We are committed to overcoming physical constraints to maximize the consumer experience.”

Notable figures from Samsung and partner companies outlined Samsung’s plans to drive positive change through exceptional innovation, impacting the individual lives of users as well as the world around them.

Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer at Samsung Europe, began by looking back at some of the company’s instrumental innovations that changed the status quo and shaped technological development. Samsung reiterated its commitment to fearlessly pioneering new endeavors, demonstrating its position as a leader within the industry.

Amidst an ever-changing world, Braun emphasized how Samsung has been actively listening to consumers throughout the years — producing leading products that meet their needs and add value to their lives. Continuing this pursuit, Samsung has shifted its focus to developing devices and appliances that both empower users on a global scale and contribute to the creation of a more sustainable future.

Enhancing Lives and Bettering the Planet
With climate change at the forefront of people’s minds, Samsung highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to reducing its environmental impact and prioritizing climate-positive solutions, touching on the targets outlined in its new environmental strategy announced in September 2022. Understanding the urgency of the climate crisis, the company set ambitious goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for its Device eXperience (DX) Division by 2030 and company-wide by 2050. To meet these goals, Samsung noted the progress in transitioning to renewable energy sources, with 31% of its operations currently running on clean energy — up from 11% in 2021. Additionally, Aimee Holloran, Business Development Manager at Samsung Climate Solutions U.K., discussed how Samsung’s environmental commitment is embedded into its products, allowing users around the world to live more sustainably through the company’s devices and appliances.

▲ “We strive to embed sustainability in every aspect of our business and product strategies,” stated Aimee Holloran, Business Development Manager at Samsung Climate Solutions U.K.

To create innovative solutions based on scientific data, Samsung has joined hands with a variety of industry leaders such as Ocean Wise and Patagonia to tackle environmental issues gripping the planet. In September 2022, the companies partnered to develop the Less Microfiber Cycle for Bespoke washing machines, a remarkable step in addressing microplastics emissions.

Taking this further, Samsung leveraged its partnership with the companies to develop another groundbreaking innovation in June 2023. Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise, highlighted the development of the revolutionary new Less Microfiber Filter for Samsung washers to reduce up to 98% of microplastic emissions from laundry cycles.

“In just a year, Ocean Wise and Samsung have demonstrated the opportunity that exists for industry leaders — to empower their communities to take positive action and create impact at scale,” added Cox.

▲ “Ocean Wise’s collaboration with Samsung and Patagonia shows there are simple ways we can all be part of the solution to microfiber shedding,” said Charlie Cox, Manager of Microplastic Solutions at Ocean Wise (left). The Less Microfiber Filter is a prime example of Samsung’s overall approach to sustainable product development – providing consumers with solutions that help them live eco-consciously using minimal effort. In line with this vision, Samsung continues to outfit its Galaxy devices with internal and external components made from recycled materials, in addition to creating product packaging that uses 100% recycled paper.

As climate change creates new challenges for people around the world, forward-thinking solutions are becoming increasingly necessary. To respond to global energy shortages and advance the transition to clean energy, Samsung emphasized its efforts in building out heat pump technology and leading the rapidly growing market in Europe.

Likewise, the company highlighted how its SmartThings home ecosystem is utilizing the latest technologies to help more than 280 million registered users save energy. By harnessing the power of AI across its line of Bespoke home appliances, Samsung’s AI Energy Mode optimizes appliance energy usage, reducing unnecessary energy waste and lowering energy bills simultaneously.

Aside from helping the planet, Samsung showcased its newest products that add value to consumers’ lives. Zeena Hill, Marketing Director at Samsung U.K., announced the launch of Samsung Food — a new AI-based application that gives users access to thousands of recipes. Samsung plans to link Samsung Food to Samsung Health by the end of this year, allowing users to better keep track of their health and dietary goals.

Samsung TVs feature unmatched image quality in sleek forms, and the company continues to release unique patterns and designs to meet the style needs of every user. Aside from enhancing entertainment, Samsung detailed the ways it is helping users stay connected to the world around them. The company reemphasized its commitment to ensuring its devices and products meet the diverse needs of consumers and touched on how its latest accessibility features help as many users as possible. This includes TalkBack for Home Appliances and Services, which reads home appliance and service content on SmartThings, and Relumino Mode, which optimizes content on Samsung TVs, for those with visual impairments.

      Future Possibilities Enabled by Technology
Partnerships have helped make some of Samsung’s technologies possible and, more broadly, brought the company closer to realizing its vision for a brighter future. In line with its goal to upgrade at-home living, Samsung partnered with electric vehicle charger manufacturer ABB and residential inverter brand SMA to collaborate on changing the ways houses are constructed.

“By integrating Samsung’s products with those of ABB and SMA, we can help make our homes even safer, smarter and more sustainable,” stated Lu Han, EVP of Building and Home Automation Solutions at ABB.
