Samsung is so terrified of the iPhone 14 that it launched an ad campaign to mock Apple (again) right before the launch event. Samsung keeps pulling the same stunt only to copy Apple’s biggest decisions later. To that point, in a recent One UI 5 beta, Samsung basically cloned one of the best new iOS 16 features: Lock Screen customization. The new Lock Screen experience in iOS 16 is something smartphone users who love customizing their handsets have been excited about. The Lock Screen is more exciting than ever, allowing you to add all sorts of widgets and visual effects. You can also change fonts and colors to match the static or dynamic images that act as the Lock Screen wallpaper. Moreover, you can set up different wallpapers for each Focus mode. Finally, if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, you can pair the new Lock Screen with Apple’s always-on display feature for even greater utility. Apple wasn’t the first to do this, and Android fans point out that they had access to Lock Screen widgets long before iOS 16 rolled out. But Apple built its own Lock Screen customization, giving users plenty of customization options to suit their needs. How Samsung cloned iOS 16’s Lock Screen feature In turn, Samsung could have come up with an original Lock Screen customization experience for its own smartphone users. Instead, Samsung just copied Apple. Maybe there’s no other way to make a Lock Screen with widgets now that Apple released iOS 16. Perhaps Samsung had no choice but to arrange user interface elements in One UI 5 just like Apple did in iOS 16. The same goes for the available customizations. Just like there probably wasn’t any other way to make the first Galaxy phones than to copy the iPhone pixel by pixel. And the wallpaper picker’s choices aren’t all that similar either. Moreover, Apple supports more third-party widgets than Samsung. Samsung only supports notifications icons for the time being. With the launch of Apple’s iPhone 14 behind us, the next major flagship smartphone will be Samsung’s Galaxy S23 in 2023. We have already seen some leaks, but on Tuesday, we might have gotten our first look at the redesign Samsung has in store for the Galaxy S23 Plus. The differences are subtle, but they should be noticeable to Samsung fans. As noted by Smartprix, Samsung seems to have abandoned the so-called “camera island” which appeared on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 Plus. In its place are three standalone cameras sticking straight out of the rear panel. Last year, this look was exclusive to the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S23 Plus will reportedly be larger than its predecessor. It should once again have a 6.6-inch display, but it will measure 157.7 x 76.1 x 7.6mm. Last year’s Galaxy S22 Plus came in at 157.4 x 75.8 x 7.6mm, so expect an ever-so-slightly taller phone this year. There will once again be a single hole-punch cutout for a selfie camera at the top center of the screen, the volume rocker and power button will be on the right side of the device, and we’ll find a speaker grille alongside the USB-C port at the bottom. Apple will launch the iPhone 14 in just a few days. And all estimates say the new series will see incredible demand after launch. iPhone 14 sales might outperform the iPhone 13, which already sold amazingly well, defying the economy. Furthermore, the iPhone 14 should sell very well in China. All of this must give Samsung nightmares, as the company has just mocked the iPhone 14 in a brand new ad. Where the highest resolution camera on a smartphone will be in someone’s pocket. And that epic moonshot that’s getting all the likes won’t be yours. Because this innovation is not coming soon to an iPhone near you. It’s already here in the Galaxy. Samsung’s fear is the best possible promotion for the iPhone 14 too. If you’re still on the fence about this upgrade, then Samsung trolling Apple is the kind of sign you might have needed. As a reminder, the iPhone 14 trolling campaign comes from a company that copied the iPhone pixel by pixel in its early days. Even today, Samsung still follows Apple’s every move after mocking the iPhone maker. And that’s why some of its anti-Apple ads then hurt Samsung. Speaking of innovations, let’s also remember Samsung is the only big smartphone maker that had to recall a flagship phone after its innovations caught on fire. Twice. Similarly, Samsung shipped a poorly designed Galaxy Fold a few years ago. It then had to postpone the launch by months. It redesigned the handset so it wouldn’t break as easily. Then there’s this year’s Galaxy S22 performance scandal. Even if you don’t want to buy the iPhone 14, you should avoid the Galaxy S22 at all costs. Samsung’s innovations turned the Galaxy S22 into an overheating mess early this year. And then there were additional misleading claims about the handset’s capabilities that should keep you away from it. With all that in mind, Samsung better buckle up. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldable phones are the main attraction of the press conference. But Samsung also has new wearables to go along with its next-gen phones. The Fold 4 and Flip 4 represent Samsung’s newest foldable smartphones. They look almost identical to their predecessors, but Samsung has a few significant changes in place — especially for the Fold 4 model. Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 platform powers the new Galaxy foldables, which should give them a significant performance bump over the Galaxy S22. And this System-on-Chip (SoC) should fix all the overheating and throttling issues from the previous generation. The Galaxy Watch 5 comes in two sizes, keeping in place the circular design Samsung employs for its Apple Watch alternatives. The future of Samsung’s foldable phones is finally here. On Wednesday, August 10th at 6:00 a.m. PT / 9:00 a.m. ET, Samsung will host its latest Galaxy Unpacked event to reveal the new Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and more. Unsurprisingly, leaks have already spoiled nearly everything there is to know about the new phones, but perhaps Samsung will have some surprises in store. You can watch along live to find out below. Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 live stream For months, Samsung has been hyping up its next-generation foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 should be the highlights of this Unpacked, as Samsung continues to iterate on the design while improving performance on both devices. According to leaks, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display as well as a 6.2-inch cover display. Inside the device are the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, 12GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, and a 4,400 mAh battery. The rear triple camera array will contain 50 MP, 12 MP ultrawide, and 10 MP telephoto lenses. Samsung should also announce the Galaxy Z Flip 4 at the August event. One of the most exciting Galaxy Z Fold 4 rumors to date concerns the foldable’s specs. More specifically, the phone’s System-on-Chip (SoC). The Fold 4 and Flip 4 will feature Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC rather than the regular 8 Gen 1 or the Exynos 2200. And the Fold 4 should deliver tremendous performance gains thanks to that. That’s good news for anyone worried about the chips that powered the Galaxy S22 series. Rumors about chip choices for Android flagships coming out in the second half of the year shouldn’t be that exciting. In most years, the Android flagships launching in the second half would feature the same SoC as the phones that were released in the previous six months. But the Galaxy S22 performance scandal hurt Samsung earlier this year, leading to speculations that Samsung would abandon the Exynos 2200 in favor of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. Galaxy S22 throttling scandal In some years, Qualcomm releases improved variants of the SoCs that power Android flagships released in the first half of the year. 2022 is one such year, with Qualcomm delivering the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 to replace the regular 8 Gen 1 model. That was even better news for Samsung fans looking to buy the Fold 4 or Flip 4. And rumors said all 2022 foldables will feature the newest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 variant. Even early benchmarks leaked, suggesting the new processor will be faster than the previous variant. Reports also claimed the new chip will not overheat as much. The software reduced the chip’s peak performance, except for benchmark apps, where Samsung was caught cheating. It’s the Exynos 2200 variant of the Galaxy S22 phones that suffered from throttling the most, not the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model. Still, there’s another reason to cheer for the 8 Plus Gen 1. Qualcomm moved production from Samsung to TSMC for the new SoC. Galaxy Z Fold 4’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 performance leaked Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 next Wednesday. The phones will hit stores a few weeks later. Once that happens, users will be able to judge for themselves the performance of the new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. And we’ll see plenty of reports detailing the phones’ performance and throttling. We assume the speed difference concerns last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. But the leaker doesn’t specify the other device/SoC in the comparison. Should the speed gains concern the Galaxy S22, then the Fold 4’s performance would be even more impressive. The leaker also says that the GPU will deliver a tremendous jump, rising by nearly 60%. The NPU would also be 68% faster than the reference model. Again, we’re assuming it’s the Fold 3. That’s the only way to present these performance gains. The leaker addressed other Galaxy Fold 4 features, not just the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 performance. The foldable phone will feature a 4,400 mAh battery that supports 25W charging. That’s enough for the phone to reach a 50% charge in half an hour. Finally, the Fold 4 will feature a 120Hz display with 1,000 nits brightness and Victus+ protection on the front and back. The Korean giant will also unveil new wearables during the show, including the Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and the new Galaxy Buds Pro 2. These devices have appeared in various leaks, but the latest rumor is easily one of the most exciting. The Galaxy Watch 5 will come with fast charging support, allowing it to recharge the battery to nearly 50% in 30 minutes. That’s a great feature to have on devices with limited battery life. If fast charging on smartwatches sounds familiar, that’s because Apple did the same thing with the Apple Watch Series 7 last year. And it’s a great feature to have to maximize the time you use the Watch. How the Apple Watch Series 7 fast charging works The Apple Watch Series 7 can reach an 80% charge in just 45 minutes. Apple also announced that the new Watch needs only 8 minutes of battery charging for the wearable to track your sleep for 8 hours. Thus, the Series 7 solves a major issue with the Apple Watch. All models that Apple launched so far only deliver one-day battery life. You can stretch it to more than a day, depending on how much you use the Watch. But most people will have to recharge the wearable at night. And that’s a problem if you want the wearable to track your sleep. It’s all the more important, the more sophisticated these gadgets get. However, for fast charging to work, wearable devices need USB-C chargers. That’s the only way to enable fast charging on the Apple Watch Series 7. And the same goes for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 5. Galaxy Watch 5 charging speed A leaker posted on Twitter images of the new Galaxy Watch 5 fast charger. It features a USB-C connector and supports 10W charging. The person also listed the speed estimate. The new smartwatch will reach 45% battery after just 30 minutes of charging. The 10W charger is an upgrade over the 5W charger that shipped with the Galaxy Watch 4 last year. According to Samsung, that device needs 110 minutes to reach a full charge. That’s a sweet deal for Samsung fans who already want to purchase a Fold 4 or Flip 4. And now we have a huge new leak that provides another helpful detail to help you decide faster. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 color options have leaked, and there will be support for Bespoke customization. Buyers are looking at 71 color choices for the Bespoke Flip 4, and the information comes directly from a Samsung website that accidentally listed the Flip 4 color options. However, it’s unclear if the Bespoke colors will be available to people who preorder the phone. Samsung lists four primary colors for the unreleased Galaxy Z Flip 4. We’re looking at Blue, Bora Purple, Graphite, and Pink Gold. These are the main colors that will be available at launch. That means you’ll have to pick from one of those during preorders. Those colors also appeared in previous leaks, as seen below. But the Care+ page also lists all the combo options for Bespoke Flip 4 customization. The site reveals five colors available to Bespoke Flip 4 buyers: Green, Navy, Red, Yellow, and White. The Care+ page also reveals that the Flip 4 will be available in the UK with 128GB and 256GB storage options. Separately, the same Samsung site listed the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Watch 5, and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which are also unreleased. The site confirmed the Fold 4 colors: Beige, Grey/Green, and Phantom Black. Also, according to the website, the Fold 4 will come in 256GB and 512GB variants. Will preorder deals include Bespoke colors? Flip 4 and Fold 4 rumors out there say the prices will remain in line with last year’s phones for the most part. But there might be some changes. But the Galaxy S23 series that launches next year will probably run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon processor. It’s all speculation at this point, but based on a significant announcement from Samsung and Qualcomm that claims the Korean giant will use more Snapdragon chips in its smartphones. Exynos is a major disappointment Samsung Exynos System-on-Chips (SoC) have never been able to match their Qualcomm counterparts, let alone outperform the iPhone. But Samsung kept using both Exynos and Snapdragon chips in its Galaxy S flagships for years. The Exynos 2200 is the last such flagship Samsung-made chip, powering Galaxy S22 variants sold in certain markets. And the Exynos 2200 might be the final nail in the Exynos coffin. The phones would get the brand new Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, leaks said. The 8 Plus Gen 1 is even more powerful and efficient than the 8 Gen 1 SoC that powers some Galaxy S22 variants. That meant the new Fold and Flip will not suffer the same throttling issues at the hand of the Exynos 2200. Or any version of it. Samsung, by the way, also mass-produced the 8 Gen 1 chip variant. But Qualcomm moved to TSMC for the 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. Fast-forward to late July, and Qualcomm and Snapdragon issued a joint announcement. The two companies said they’ll extend their patent licensing agreement for seven years through 2030. More importantly, the announcement says that Snapdragon Platforms will power future Samsung Galaxy devices. The list includes “smartphones, PCs, tablets, extended reality, and more,” the press release says. Qualcomm didn’t list the Galaxy S23 as a beneficiary of the upcoming Snapdragon chips. But considering the context, it certainly seems like Snapdragon is a much better choice for Samsung’s future flagship. A report from an insider said earlier this month that Samsung would move to a Snapdragon-only strategy for the Galaxy S23 series. Also, we shouldn’t be surprised to see Samsung use only Snapdragon flagship SoCs in future flagships beyond the Galaxy S23. The newest rumor comes from Korea, providing price and preorder details for both the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4. How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 cost? Recent rumors from Europe gave us somewhat good news about Samsung’s pricing plans for the new foldables. We learned that the 256GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 might be €50 (about $50) more expensive than last year’s model. This implied the 256GB Fold 4 might not start at $1,799 in the US as the Fold 3 did. However, unlike last year, Samsung will reportedly have a 128GB Galaxy Z Fold 4 version in stock. If the European price leak is accurate, the Fold 4 might still start at $1,799 in the US before deals and discounts. But buyers will only get half the storage for that price. The Galaxy S23 is still a ways out, with Samsung getting ready to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 in a few weeks. But the 2023 flagship has started appearing in leaks. The newest rumor claims that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will feature the same zoom camera as its predecessor. According to a new report, it will have a 10-megapixel shooter, just like in previous years. Samsung might be looking to cut costs by sticking with a tried and true sensor for the telephoto lens. But that’s not necessarily bad considering the grim outlook for Android handset sales in the coming months. Moreover, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s zoom performance is spectacular already. Why fix what isn’t broken? The Galaxy S Ultra introduced Samsung’s first periscope zoom cameras. The Galaxy S20 Ultra was the first Samsung phone to support 100x zoom, which was more of a marketing gimmick than a feature you could reliably use. The internet was filled at the time with camera samples at different zoom levels, but anything over 30x showed that Samsung’s Super Resolution Zoom wasn’t something most people needed. Fast forward to the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s periscope camera, and the zoom experience has improved significantly. Those samples showing 100x zoom photos are a lot cleaner. And they’re finally usable. Samsung says the new SmartSSD will process data faster and reduce latency between the SSD and the CPU. This should help cut down on concerns about the CPU bottlenecking the speed at which the SmartSSD performs. New Samsung SmartSSD can process your data 50% faster, Samsung claims Samsung says that its new SmartSSD can process data 50% faster than the previous generation. It also uses 70 percent less power and reduces CPU utilization by 97 percent compared to standard SSD devices. That means the new SmartSSD should allow you to make use of your frequently accessed data without any bottlenecking. This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into computational storage, either. As noted above, this is the company’s second generation SmartSSD. The first offering wasn’t bad, offering some improvements over traditional storage options. However, with the new features and technology that Samsung’s SmartSSD now offers, you can expect it to push the bar a bit more. Samsung also has a long history with SSDs. It does this thanks to a system built into the SSD itself. AMD Xilinx Versal FPGA powers the SSD. It’s a good move, and one that’s proving to be useful, especially in systems where data movement is important. For the moment, Samsung’s SmartSSD is more geared towards the AI/ML inferencing market. That means users who rely on analytics and transcoding will be able to rely on the faster speed of the SmartSSD to be able to process their data quicker. Samsung formally announced its new 3nm chip technology a few weeks ago. But the Korean giant will reportedly showcase the world’s first such processor next week. Samsung unveiled the 3nm chip’s new Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor architecture, which is supposed to be significantly more efficient and faster than current 5nm chips. While Samsung has started mass-production on the new 3nm chips that will hopefully power flagship phones like the Galaxy S one day, it’s unclear what these devices might be. It’s also not clear if Samsung has a chance to actually steal any business from TSMC. The Taiwanese foundry builds the most important mobile processors in the world right now. Samsung’s new 3nm chips look good on paper Samsung said in its original announcement that the new 3nm GAA chips will offer plenty of reasons to upgrade from the current 5nm tech. The GAA tech will bring substantial efficiency gains that should improve battery life. That’s on top of significant performance improvements and size reduction: In addition, the design flexibility of GAA is highly advantageous for Design Technology Co-Optimization (DTCO),1 which helps boost Power, Performance, Area (PPA) benefits. Compared to 5nm process, the first-generation 3nm process can reduce power consumption by up to 45%, improve performance by 23% and reduce area by 16% compared to 5nm, while the second-generation 3nm process is to reduce power consumption by up to 50%, improve performance by 30% and reduce area by 35%. But the specs alone aren’t enough to guarantee the success of Samsung’s semiconductor business in winning 3nm chip orders from major companies. TSMC continues to be the main Samsung rival. Among others, TSMC manufactures all the A-series and M-Series chips that Apple uses in iPhones, iPads, and Macs. A new Samsung Calendar update introduces several key improvements to the app. It will also allow users to create new events much easier. Samsung’s calendar app has always been useable, but this new update could make it even more useful for Android smartphone users. The app appears to utilize a system similar to the now-defunct language processing system that Google Calendar used to utilize. The Samsung Calendar update also introduces better invitation management. And you’ll be able to add recommendations quicker, too. Version 12.3.05.10000 of the Samsung Calendar app offers all of these improvements. They all tie in easily with the features that already exist in the app, including some you may not be aware of. One big improvement is the option to check group calendar invitations from the calendar management page. This is the page you’d normally check to determine how you view your calendar within the app. Changing how the app handles event creation Image source: Samsung Of course, the most notable improvement is a change to how this Samsung Calendar update connects a time and location to your event. Previously, the app could determine the time an event should be set based on the title. For example, writing “Lunch at 2” into the event’s title would cause the app to suggest a time of 2 pm for the event. The update will also make it simpler to determine your event’s location. Now, if you type “Lunch at 2 at Byron’s Steakhouse”, it will suggest a location with the latest Samsung Calendar update. And, if you don’t want to keep all that information in the event, you can now remove it easily, too. Simply head into the Calendar settings and select “Remove times from event titles” to clean up the event title. This is a similar feature that used to be available in Google Calendar. Google removed it back during a calendar redesign in 2018, though. It’s unclear why Google removed the option, but it definitely makes creating events much easier. So it is nice to see it make some kind of return in the latest Samsung Calendar update On top of the new update making events easier to create, managing them will be easier, too. Like clockwork, Samsung president and head of the mobile division TM Roh penned a blog this week, just a few weeks ahead of the upcoming Unpacked press conference that will focus on this year’s Galaxy Z foldable phones, the Fold 4 and Flip 4. We saw the same thing happen last year, and we now expect Roh to keep writing similar blogs with every Fold and Flip release. Roh just hinted that Samsung sold a massive number of foldable phones in 2021 by mentioning a figure of 10 million foldable phone sales for the period. Or so it seems. Because, when you think about it, 10 million units is a drop in the bucket for Samsung, whose smartphone sales routinely pass 250 million units a year. Roh’s remarks indicate what some consumers might have already realized: Foldable phones might not be worth it yet. What Samsung really needs is a foldable iPhone to lead the way. Foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip are fascinating on paper. They offer larger screens and smaller footprints. The Fold is especially exciting as it lets the user make the most of two types of devices — a smartphone and a tablet. A brief history of Samsung’s foldable phones Samsung has been at the forefront of foldable handsets for years. It teased the form factor well before the technology was ready. And then it released the first Galaxy Fold before actually testing it properly in real-life environments. The initial launch failed miserably, as Samsung had to find fixes for critical design flaws that led to the destruction of the phone. The Fold 2 and Fold 3 significantly improved the phone’s durability, especially the latter. The Fold 3 is the best possible foldable phone that Samsung can make. And even so, the Fold 3 is hardly perfect. The Fold 4 should fix some of the usability and design issues the Fold 3 suffers from. Image source: iFixit But Samsung’s foldables aren’t true flagships like the Galaxy S and Note. The Fold series actually helped “kill” the Note without replacing it. The camera experience is still unable to match that of the Galaxy S Ultra, although the Fold 4 might change that. The Flip 4 is even further away. Not to mention that Samsung can’t fully control the software. Samsung’s success in the foldable business hinges on Google’s willingness to adapt Android for foldable screens. And it’s up to Google to convince Android app developers to update their apps to make the most of Fold and Flip phones. But why go through all that hassle for just 10 million potential customers? Add to that the flagship price for a somewhat fragile, not-flagship device, and you’ll get why people won’t want a foldable instead of a traditional phone, especially in this economy. Are foldables really going mainstream? This brings us to Roh’s new post about Samsung foldable phones titled The Mainstream Moment for Foldable Smartphones Is Here. In this post, he said the industry registered almost 10 million foldable smartphone sales worldwide last year. That’s an increase of more than 300% from 2020. And Roh says he predicts “this fast-paced growth will continue.” “We are reaching the moment where these foldable devices are becoming widespread and staking a bigger claim in the overall smartphone market,” he said. A quick back-of-the-napkin calculation tells us that handset makers should sell 30 million foldable phones this year to keep that 300% pace in place. That is hardly reasonable for the economy we’re currently living in. Not to mention that some estimates see Samsung selling only 15 million foldable phones in 2022. It’s unlikely that Chinese companies can make up for the rest. And a foldable iPhone isn’t coming anytime soon. Google apps running on Galaxy Fold 3 foldable. Image source: Google How many Galaxy Z Fold 3 units did Samsung sell? Then, Samsung might sell only 10 million Fold 5 and Flip 5 units in 2023. If these estimates are accurate, Samsung’s foldable sales will grow by 50% this year compared to the entire industry’s performance in 2021. And then they’ll stay flat next year in a best-case scenario. To put things in perspective, Apple routinely sells around 200 million iPhones yearly. For massive profits and without crazy deals in place. Also, annual smartphone shipments have reached at least 1.28 billion units per year since 2014. Meanwhile, reports say that Apple can’t make a foldable iPhone because it can’t mass-produce enough foldable glass covers to satisfy its needs. That implies that foldable iPhone volumes would be so large no supplier could handle the parts order. Not even Samsung, whose foldable phone tech might very well end up inside a foldable iPhone. Let’s also observe that Roh did not reveal which foldable smartphones sold the best. Last year, Samsung sold four foldable handsets: The Fold 2, Flip 2, Fold 3, and Flip 3. But he did say that 70% of Samsung’s buyers opted for the Flip experience rather than the Fold. The Note would have probably outsold all Samsung foldables combined last year. But Samsung had no Note 21 in stores. Apple’s iPhone SE 2 outsold the Galaxy Folds and Flips combined. And while Samsung has been selling more foldables than anybody else, it barely has any competition. Some of the exciting foldable phones from China aren’t available widely. Not to mention that Samsung ran massive campaigns to convince buyers to try and keep foldable phones. You could try the Fold 2 for 100 days and then return it. Or trade in everything but the kitchen sink to buy a Fold 3, with a retail price starting at $1,799. And whether foldables will go mainstream with Samsung as the locomotive. But that’s where a foldable iPhone would really help. Samsung would not rest on its laurels and write self-congratulatory blog posts every summer if a foldable iPhone were to launch just a few weeks after the newest Fold. Also, the more time that passes without a foldable iPhone, the harder it will be for Samsung to replace the traditional smartphone with a foldable form factor. And at 10 million units sold annually, that’s hardly going mainstream. That’s because something else might kill traditional smartphones: The sophisticated AR glasses of the future. Samsung has allegedly cancelled the Galaxy S22 FE. The Fan Edition of Samsung’s latest flagship was expected to arrive sometime this year. However, new reports point towards Samsung dumping it in favor of meeting the demands for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. That original report, which was translated from Korean, says that Samsung cancelled the Galaxy S22 FE in order to expand on supply for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The S22 Ultra is the company’s current high-end flagship. With the ongoing chip shortages, the company has reportedly been struggling to keep up with demand for the device. TheElec says that Samsung originally planned to produce around 3 million units of the Galaxy S22 FE model. However, the S22 FE would have used the same chip as the S22 Ultra. Instead, Samsung decided to save supply for the Ultra. Samsung has yet to share any official notes about the Galaxy S22 FE being cancelled. There were previous reports about Samsung swapping the FE version to a Mediatek chip. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The chip shortage has had an immense impact on the mobile industry for the past several years. And it looks like the Galaxy S22 FE is simply another victim of that shortage. Hopefully, by then much of the chip shortage will have returned to normal. According to reports, Samsung plans to manufacture 3 million units for the S23 FE. However, we’ll need to wait and see how everything pans out in the long run. The unprecedented success of the S22 Ultra during a time when chip shortages are still affecting the mobile industry is notable. And it makes sense for Samsung to push its manufacturing supply toward the higher-end device. Still, there is a lot of love out there for the company’s Fan Editions. And the Galaxy S22 FE’s cancellation may be disappointing for many. But, keep in mind that this is not official news. All I can recommend right now is to wait for additional confirmation from Samsung on the cancellation. It’s still possible that the device could drop in the coming months. The Galaxy S23 Ultra might feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, says an insider familiar with Samsung’s plans. Similar sensors are already in use or will come on other Android flagships. And it so happens that Samsung has a few Isocell sensors with 200 megapixels. But Ice Universe says it’s unclear which sensor will end up in the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra that will be released next year. Ice Universe often leaks details about unreleased Samsung devices on Twitter. While it might seem too early for Galaxy S23 Ultra rumors, the leaker already shared some camera specs on social media. He posted the image below, which reportedly comes from an upcoming Motorola flagship phone. The primary camera is a 200-megapixel sensor that the leaker identifies as HP1. That’s short for Isocell HP1, a 200-megapixel sensor that Samsung unveiled last year. The Moto flagship phone has a 200MP sensor (HP1) and you're looking at a 4 in 1 photo, 50MP. However, it’s unclear which sensor Samsung will employ for its upcoming flagship. The HP1 isn’t the latest camera innovation from Samsung, as the company has an updated HP3 200-megapixel sensor in production. The leaker is also very vocal on Twitter when it comes to criticizing what he perceives as Samsung’s failures when it comes to mobile devices. Unlike its early days in the smartphone business, Samsung no longer increases the camera megapixel count on its smartphones just for the sake of bragging about specs. The Galaxy S20 Ultra came with a 108-megapixel sensor three years ago, but the upgrade was walked back with the Ultra’s larger camera setup. The Galaxy S22 Ultra also rocks a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera. If Ice’s claims are correct, the Galaxy S23 Ultra might be the first Galaxy S flagship to get a 200-megapixel camera. Samsung unveiled the Isocell HP1 sensor last year without specifying which smartphones would get the 200-megapixel camera. We now know Samsung never meant to use the camera on its 2022 flagships. A few weeks ago, Samsung unveiled the HP3 camera, which is also a 200-megapixel sensor. The video below explains the benefits of the sensor. In short, these cameras will improve resolution in well-lit environments. But they will automatically combine pixels and reduce the overall resolution to improve low-light and night photography. The HP3 sensor should deliver improved autofocus and better HDR algorithms. Moreover, Samsung also says the Isocell HP3 camera will support 8K video recording at up to 30fps. That said, the Isocell HP3 might not be the 200-megapixel camera that Samsung uses for the Galaxy S23 Ultra next year. On Tuesday morning, press renders of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 leaked online. We had a good idea of what Samsung’s next-gen foldable phones would look like already, but now the final designs are floating around online. On the right side, we can see a number of folded Z Flips. The Z Flip 4 will reportedly come in lavender, cream, black, and blue colorways. The back of the Z Flip 4 will once again feature a dual camera setup, but rumors claim the new model is getting a 2.1-inch cover screen. That would be a touch larger than the 1.9-inch cover screen of the Z Flip 3. Finally, the report notes that the Z Flip 4 will feature a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a 3,700mAh battery, up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, a 12-megapixel primary camera and 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and support for 25W fast charging. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4 next month. New rumors claim the Unpacked press conference will take place on August 10th, which is in line with expectations. Everything but the price has leaked, so we know what to expect from the upcoming Samsung foldable flagships. New Galaxy flagships usually leak several months ahead of their launches, including new foldables. But, in an unexpected twist, the Fold 5’s key specs have leaked with more than a year to go until it’s ready for release. These include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that should be launched later this year and a 50-megapixel camera. What to expect from the Galaxy Z Fold 4 It’s easy to speculate on a foldable Android flagship like the Galaxy Z Fold 5. The handset should deliver a familiar design. Moreover, the Fold 5 specs will be on par with other 2023 Android high-end phones. We don’t expect significant changes for the Fold 5 design, given what Samsung is doing with Fold 4. The handset has appeared in various leaks, and we know it’ll look just like its predecessor. Samsung is changing the aspect ratio so users can operate the Fold 4 better when folded. The phone should also feature a new hinge mechanism that will help Samsung reduce the overall weight. The Fold 4 will also be at least as durable as its predecessor, despite the weight and size changes. As for the specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will run on Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon System-on-Chip (SoC) flagship, the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. Thankfully, there reportedly won’t be an Exynos 2200 variant of the phone. Therefore, buyers don’t have to worry about performance issues similar to the Galaxy S22. The Fold 4 should also deliver an improved camera experience with a 50-megapixel primary camera, 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and 10-megapixel telephoto camera. The Fold 4 will also feature a 4-megapixel selfie camera hidden under the foldable display. A secondary 10-megapixel selfie camera punches through the outer display. Other specs include 12GB of RAM, 128GB of base storage (going up to 1TB), 4,400 mAh battery, and 25W fast-charging. But a Korean report mentions the phone’s main specs about a year earlier than expected. According to The Elec, the Fold 5 specs will include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that Qualcomm will launch later this year. That’s the kind of guess any Android fan can make, however. The report also mentions specs details for the cameras. The Fold 5 will reportedly pack Samsung’s Isocell GN3 50-megapixel wide camera. The GN3 sensor features 1.0μm pixels. Meanwhile, the selfie camera will feature a 12-megapixel sensor. These should both be upgrades over the Fold 3 and Fold 4 cameras. But this year’s model will also have a 50-megapixel primary camera. The report doesn’t mention additional Fold 5 specs, focusing instead on Samsung’s overall strategy for the 2023 foldable market. The Elec says Samsung is aiming to sell 10 million Fold 5 and Flip 5 units next year. Only 2 million of those are expected to be Fold 5 units. That seems like a healthy figure for the company, which continues to be the primary beneficiary of foldable phone sales after the success of the Fold 3 and Flip 3. But the 10 million figure is actually lower than this year’s expected Samsung foldable phone sales. Samsung apparently wants to sell 15 million foldable phones this year. But the company expects demand to drop significantly in 2023. Also, the ongoing war in Ukraine will continue to impact the prices of commodities. Plus, the resurgence of COVID-19 is another thing to worry about. Combined with worries about the economy and a recession, these factors might reduce demand for all sorts of goods, foldable phones included. On Monday morning, leaker Evan Blass tweeted out a leaked promotional image for the next Galaxy Unpacked event. The image reveals that Samsung will debut the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 on August 10th. We’re only about a month away from Samsung’s second most important press conference of the year. The upcoming Unpacked event will introduce the 2022 Galaxy Z foldables, including the Fold 4 and Flip 4. Almost everything has leaked about the new handsets, and we think we know the design and specs updates coming this year. After leaks indicating a major storage upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, we have a more definitive rumor on the matter. And it also lists the various launch colors for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, including a new Burgundy Red option. Will the Galaxy Z Fold 4 feature expandable microSD storage? Galaxy Z Fold 4 buyers should care more about storage than color options, although some might disagree. Most smartphones ship with 128GB of storage on board these days, iPhones included. Samsung has been phasing out expandable storage from its flagships. Buyers who need a lot of local data should consider upgrading the memory at purchase. A report a few days ago suggested that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Z Fold 4 in two storage options: 512GB and 1TB of flash memory. That seemed both good and bad news. Bumping the storage to 512GB for the base model would be incredible. But that would imply that Samsung can’t drop the Fold 4 price this year. Instead, Samsung will offer buyers the regular storage tiers: 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. That means Fold fans can still dream of a lower entry price for the handset. That’s because the Fold 3 isn’t available in a 128GB version. The listing doesn’t mention any 1TB option. But it’s likely that Samsung will offer that storage tier in some markets. Moving on to colors, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 might come in at least four colors at launch. The listing mentions Beige, Burgundy Red, Gray Green, and Phantom Black. The Burgundy Red model will only come in 256GB and 512GB storage options. That said, pricing details for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 aren’t available. However, they’ll probably leak well before Samsung’s upcoming Fold 4 and Flip 4 launch event.
