Samsung Electronics announced a new update for Samsung TV Plus,1 its widely-used free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service. The latest version of Samsung TV Plus introduces user interface (UI) enhancements and new features, aimed at streamlining content discovery and elevating the user experience (UX). This update has been applied to cover 2,500 channels+ across all 24 countries where Samsung TV Plus is available. ▲ The latest Samsung TV Plus update features new features and a user interface (UI) overhaul to allow for better content discovery New UI Dedicated to Expanding Content Discovery The new Samsung TV Plus update includes a redesigned home screen to provide an overview of content available for viewing, in addition to popular titles and recently watched content. The updated UI also features newly added categories on the left side of the home screen to include sections such as Live TV, Movies/TV Shows, Music, Kids and Settings, and more. Each category offers a broad range of content that can be easily accessed at any time. More Than Hands-On: A Transformative Education Experience With Samsung Smart Signage Digital signage is powerful and has the ability to draw in a viewer, captivate them, and bring them to another world — it provides a truly transformative experience. This impact is felt across industries and when we look at the education space in particular, signage has made immeasurable improvements. Samsung partnered with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David to launch an unparalleled learning environment. Samsung Electronics America announced it has brought Samsung display technologies to the highly anticipated FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX 2023 through its partnership with Liberty Media and Las Vegas Grand Prix, Inc. With lights out on November 18, spectators attending the race in Las Vegas or watching from around the world will see Samsung display technologies shine bright throughout the Las Vegas Grand Prix pit building, including 3 extra-large grandstand screens with a total of 3.8 million pixels, a dynamic tight-pitch display that serves as a backdrop for the entry escalator as well as a new “star” in the sky an LED display in the form of the F1 logo — the dazzling LED display that sits atop the 1,000-foot-long pit building rooftop that’s so bright, it may even be visible from outer space. “As F1’s viewership skyrockets in the U.S., Liberty Media and the Las Vegas Grand Prix are focused on delivering the most memorable experiences for fans in attendance as well as viewing the broadcast around the world,” said James Fishler, Senior Vice President of the Display and Home Entertainment Divisions, Samsung Electronics America. “The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix is a turning point for the sport of racing, as the installation of these best-in-class Samsung displays dramatically adorns the Las Vegas Grand Prix pit building and revolutionizes how fans in the grandstands watch this race.” F1 Rooftop Logo The 28,166-square-foot 10mm LED display with over 22 million pixels spans 481 feet — longer than a football field — and mirrors the shape of the F1 logo, exciting viewers watching from home as broadcasters use the sign to provide more immersive and close-up views of the race. For 14 consecutive years, Samsung Electronics has led the commercial display market with its innovations.1 This year, the company has set the standard for displays once again with the release of The Wall for Virtual Production (IVC Model) — an ultra-large MICRO LED-based display customized for virtual content production. Lauded for its unmatched color capabilities, pristine high definition, and black seal technology for ultra black levels, The Wall for Virtual Production was unveiled at Infocomm 2023, the largest audiovisual tradeshow in North America, and the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) 2023, a premier exhibition for broadcasting and media in Europe. Samsung Newsroom sat down with Chan Hyoung Park, Vice President of Visual Display (VD) Business at Samsung Electronics, Mark Taylor, European Head of LED at Samsung Electronics, and developers Sanghoon Oh and Hyun Ji to learn more about the inspiration for the display and the future of film production. Increased Content Immersion and Reduced Production Costs Virtual production is a method of filmmaking that combines computer-generated imagery with live-action footage to create next-level content. The use of both physical and digital elements gives filmmakers the ability to visualize imaginative scenes in new ways. ▲ Virtual production can reduce production costs and post-production editing time as filmmakers can view results in real time by utilizing a ultra-large, high-definition LED display. As virtual production enables filmmakers to overcome the limitations of physical sets or environments, an increasing number of ultra-large, high-definition LED displays are being incorporated into production — saving time and cutting costs during post-production editing. Unlike chroma key green screens, which require image compositing and color correction during post-production, LED screens for virtual production can seamlessly display a breathtaking background behind moving actors. LED walls, such as The Wall for Virtual Production, offer advantages against both these methods. With these screens, producers are able to efficiently make edits to video in real time, whilst actors experience better immersion because of the lifelike, ultra-high definition images. ▲ Mark Taylor underscores how virtual production screens increase the level of immersion for actors during filming. Mark Taylor, European Head of LED, explained how these features make virtual production an attractive form of film production. “If producers were to add a lot of effects post-production, it takes a long time and the cost can be lot higher. But a lot of it’s actually being done in-camera. With LED walls, actors can crucially interact with the video behind them, making the experience much more immersive,” he said. “In addition, because LED is its own self-emitting light, you can put that in much brighter environments than projections, and you don’t have to use camera settings and lighting to compensate for that, resulting in more flexibility. Adoption Throughout the Film and TV Industry Virtual production techniques are becoming increasingly popular because of their specific advantages. Large-scale blockbuster films that require heavy visual effects began shifting to virtual production during the pandemic, and many studios have continued to use it since. Likewise, various OTT platforms have followed this trend to further market growth. To usher in the era of virtual production, CJ ENM — a leading entertainment company in South Korea — teamed up with Samsung to install The Wall Virtual Production Stage in Paju, South Korea last May. With applications expanding to advertising and live commerce, virtual production will set a new standard for production across various sectors. ▲ The Virtual Production market is expected to grow 18% YoY globally through 2030 Optimization of Virtual Production Studios The Wall for Virtual Production is equipped with the latest visual technologies such as newly developed LED elements and ultra-anti-reflective film so the darkest colors show up clearly on screen even under the brightest production lights. Each screen module is built to a 4:9 ratio, slimmer than the conventional 16:9, to help reduce the angle between cabinets and thus prevent video distortion from light reflections. “In the early stages of developing The Wall for Virtual Production, we wanted to ensure the product was suitable for diverse studio environments,” said Samsung developer Hyun Ji. “We accomplished this by creating a display that can be installed in numerous orientations such as being hung or stacked with other screens. This flexibility allows productions to adapt the screen to their sets. In addition, we’ve prevented screen distortions by reducing the product’s length and eliminating light reflection by applying ultra-anti-reflective film for more natural videos.” ▲ The Wall for Virtual Production modules are compatible with both hanging and stacking structures to fit production needs The modular nature of The Wall for Virtual Production allows it to be constructed in a variety of forms ideal for any environment — from a perfectly flat screen to up to 6,000R curvature. Additionally, the width can be extended by any length while the height can range from 9m to 13.5m (up to 10 modules hung or 15 modules stacked). To keep the weight evenly distributed, Samsung developed a uniquely patented structure to ensure the display is stable. “With the leveler-style supporting structure applied, the weight of the modules is evenly distributed among the cabinets,” explained Ji. To minimize distortion when cameras are connected, The Wall boasts the highest industry refresh rate of up to 12,288Hz for unparalleled image quality. Samsung developer Sanghoon Oh explained how this refresh rate is ideal for studio production. “By achieving this impressively high refresh rate, we’ve minimized screen distortions that occur when subjects overlap or when horizontal lines form due to camera movement,” he said. ▲ Hyun Ji (left) and Sanghoon Oh who worked on the development of The Wall for Virtual Production Aside from the impressive scale of the display, Samsung applied innovative software solutions to The Wall for Virtual Production to ensure visuals are replicated seamlessly on screen. The company equipped the display with Generator Locking (Genlock) to synchronize the screen and camera’s video signals as well as Phase Offset to adjust any delays between the camera and screen. Oh explained how Samsung’s industry and technological expertise has helped the company perfect its products. “Samsung can respond to various market demands efficiently because the company designs and produces its own hardware — including LED modules, cabinets and S-Box (a dedicated video player) — as well as its own software solutions — such as LED Signage Manager (LSM) for LED operation control and Virtual Production Manager (VPM) for virtual production,” he said. The Next Era of Content Production Unveiled earlier this year, The Wall for Virtual Production has already garnered attention from industry professionals and creatives alike. “Although we’ve just begun, we’ll work to strengthen the product’s competitive market edge and lead the industry,” said Oh. Each individual LED emits light and the three primary colors — red, green and blue — resulting in stunning picture quality without the need for a color filter. “Traditional displays such as OLED and LCD have a filter and additional layers of materials over their light source which can block or absorb some of the light and impact the visual experience,” explained Son. “On the other hand, MICRO LED does not utilize additional material layers, ensuring unmatched color reproduction.” Another distinguishing feature of MICRO LED is Samsung’s nanometer technology, derived from the company’s leading semiconductor expertise. This allows for LED chip operation circuits to be directly deposited on the glass, mitigating any loss of brightness that users may experience with conventional displays. Additionally, inorganic LEDs eliminate the possibility of screen burn-ins or permanent screen discoloration. ▲ The unique technological advantages of MICRO LED offers several benefits including better picture quality, durability and flexibility Pioneering the Next Frontier in Displays The creation of MICRO LED marked a significant step forward in visual display technology. While previous iterations of TVs were created and commercialized through collective industry innovation, the development of MICRO LED was notably different — combining years of extensive research and testing undertaken by Son and his team. “We were determined to provide viewers with a next-level visual experience,” said Son. “As it was an emerging technology, there were various challenges to overcome. This project needed a bold player that could take the risks – Samsung was it. Samsung We recruited brilliant experts for the project and invested heavily in the success of the product which went through numerous rounds of trial and error.” As the name suggests, a MICRO LED display consists of millions of LED units — the most fundamental yet essential part of a screen. For the display to function at peak performance, each LED unit is rigorously tested against the highest quality benchmarks. ▲ Cutting-edge technologies from several neighboring categories, including semiconductor production, AI software, etc. were incorporated to create the MICRO LED The substrate for the LED chips is constructed before the chips are meticulously transferred onto it, creating a unified module. Once produced, the module is assembled into a display and undergoes more than 600 hours of extensive reliability tests and stabilization procedures to ensure that the display provides a stunning visual experience for users. Son explained the precision needed to place the LEDs that makes the process extremely challenging. “Imagine trying to place a tiny object, smaller than a human hair, in a specific position and angle. Then, repeat this action over half a million times. This is the process for placing LEDs, with each placement needing to be flawless,” he said. ▲ Son explains how the arduous and often challenging process pushed the team to continue innovating, leading to the successful development of the MICRO LED screen. To streamline this process, Samsung’s development team began to seek out a new solution. Drawing from the company’s semiconductor expertise, the team adopted techniques used to delicately place circuits on silicon wafers and applied them to MICRO LEDs displays. After testing out the method, the process was deemed a success and considered commercially viable for future production. “We never lost sight of our goal of creating a revolutionary display. We never lost faith.” – Tae-yong Son, Vice President, Samsung Electronics The display’s modular nature posed another challenge for developers: How could they create a single, unified image uninterrupted by lines or bezels? After years of refinement, Samsung was able to create an advanced auto-assembly method, allowing 49 distinct modules to merge seamlessly into a single, breathtaking bezel-less display. “After six years and more than 200 iterations, we honed the technology that integrates each individual module to create MICRO LED displays of all sizes,” said Son. “Despite the hurdles we faced along the way, we never lost sight of our goal of creating a revolutionary display. We never doubted that we’ll make it.” Initiate, Iterate, Innovate: The Relentless Pursuit of Innovation A sense of understanding and like-mindedness among the developers was instrumental during the development of MICRO LED technology. Son emphasized that “engineers need to overcome the fear of failure, understand that it’s part of the innovation process.” Realizing that failure provides an opportunity for future success and innovation, Son and his team used their setbacks as motivation to continue developing. “Embracing a culture of courage and curiosity, we were able to forge ahead — recognizing that each challenge we encountered was a step in the right direction toward innovation,” explained Son. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team, we were able to bring this revolutionary technology to life. Viewing the process of trial and error as a learning opportunity rather than a hindrance can help propel us closer to technological breakthroughs.” ▲ Over a period of six years, Son and his team fine-tuned MICRO LED technology for commercial use. Bringing MICRO LED Closer to Consumers While MICRO LED displays are poised to redefine the industry, introducing them to the market poses certain challenges — longer consumer adoption cycles, significant initial investments and the need to scale manufacturing processes efficiently. Alongside these factors, well-established alternatives such as LCDs and OLEDs currently dominate the market, making market penetration of MICRO LED screens slower and more difficult. “Engineers need to overcome the fear of failure — it’s just part of the innovation process” – Tae-yong Son, Vice President, Samsung Electronics Despite this, Son views these challenges as opportunities. “The display market is constantly evolving and new technologies often take time to find their footing,” stated Son. “While adoption may be slow right now, it’s reflective of the typical incubation period for advanced technologies. As we continue to innovate and drive down production costs, MICRO LED technology will become more accessible to a broader consumer base.” To introduce MICRO LED displays to more consumers, Samsung plans to invest in methods that will optimize manufacturing processes and effectively reduce costs — alongside targeted marketing efforts to educate consumers on the unique benefits of MICRO LED screens. Although MICRO LED technology is still in the early market stages, interest has been steadily growing with 110-inch MICRO LED displays having been sold since its official release. In a single video, you can see the creator’s careful balancing of contrast and color, as well as the aesthetics that go into every little detail. This is especially true for “picture quality demo” videos, which showcase the display’s full specs, capabilities and their potentials. When creating a picture quality demo video, it’s all about the details. This is why ultra-high resolution monitor should be used to create elaborate demo content. Samsung Newsroom met with various artists who are using ViewFinity S9 to talk about how technology affects their creative process and artwork. The art professionals include DEVSISTERS who emphasized the importance of monitors in 3D design; OIMU which delivers the beautiful Korean names of colors; and Mike Perry, who suggests a new perspective with graphics design. In this last installment of the ViewFinity S9 Story series, Samsung Newsroom sat down with CEO and VFX Supervisor Seungmo Kim of RABBIT WALKS to explore how he pushes the boundaries of display. ▲ CEO and VFX Supervisor Seungmo Kim of RABBIT WALKS Established in 2010, RABBIT WALKS has grown into a professional 3D content studio, having directed over 1,400 commercials, brand films and much more. The professional visual content company is developing various solutions for digital media with its industry-leading technological prowess, specifically in live streaming CG(Computer-generated Graphics) using game engine and 8K or higher-resolution content. Q: Tell us a bit about your role at RABBIT WALKS. I oversee content direction and visual effects, with a primary focus on ads and picture quality demo videos for digital signage. For picture quality demo reels, it’s important to understand a display’s technology to make the most of its capabilities. So, I spend a lot of time and effort into understanding monitors while creating demo content. I am checking the picture quality pixel by pixel and making fine adjustments frame by frame to push the refresh rate to its limits. A picture quality demo video is designed to showcase the full specs, features and capabilities of digital signage. Given that these demo videos for large signages should be produced in ultra-high resolution, the monitor’s resolution matters a lot. Recently, I created a wide8K picture quality demo content for a seven-meter display, designed to be viewed from just a meter away. At this distance, even the tiniest pixel can be noticeable, which is why I needed to check every detail and even the slightest noise. With ViewFinity, I found that previews closely mirrored the final product, which was really helpful. When working on content with ultra-high resolutions, including 8K content and beyond, we often find that our monitors fall short in resolutions. Fortunately, the ViewFinity monitor features a 5K resolution which provides more space than 4K monitors without sacrificing details. It greatly enhances efficiency as it shows more areas. I often just carry a monitor when filming outside on small scale productions, but the bright environment and light reflections can get in the way. The other day, I brought ViewFinity S9 to my filming location for monitoring, and its Matte Display reduced the light reflection and really improved my productivity. And, the screen itself was so bright that I could monitor the results than I expected. Her unique artwork has resonated deeply with audiences, quickly making her one of the most beloved artists on the platform since March 2023. Samsung Newsroom sat down with Saya to explore her fascinating artistic universe and discuss how partnering with the Samsung Art Store has broadened access to her art. Saya Woolfalk is a New York-based artist who masterfully blends science fiction and fantasy to reshape our understanding of reality. Her art takes the form of vibrant sculptures, installations and digital works — celebrating the fusion of different races and cultures. ▲ Saya Woolfalk Origins of Imagination: Saya Woolfalk’s Artistic Journey and Background Q: Please give a brief introduction about yourself as an artist. How has your background inspired your art? I’ve been working as a professional artist for around 20 years, but my journey as an artist began during my childhood. Growing up in New York and spending summers with my grandmother in Gifu, Japan, exposed me to a rich multicultural environment that influenced me significantly. When I began to make art in college, I pulled from this experience and found inspiration for my work. My family in Japan owned a textile company, and my grandmother taught me how to sew. As a result, most of my early work was in textiles. Looking back on those formative years, I now see most of my work as a form of quilt or textile collage — inspired by the time I spent creating with my maternal grandmother. Within the realm of my artistic endeavors, I focus on creating worlds where diverse cultural elements collide, clash and mingle. We live in a multicultural world where people from various backgrounds cohabitate on a single planet. I strive to produce art that explores this complicated experience. Like most artists working in speculative fiction, my work is more centered on hybridity in the present than the future. Q: What is your approach to the creative process? How do you challenge yourself to venture into new and unfamiliar territories with your creations? I start with drawing and painting when beginning a new piece. Then, I move on to digital rendering. My artistic process is fluid, as I’m constantly flowing between the analog and digital worlds. Amidst this dynamic interplay, my digital renderings are essentially speculative spaces where I imagine something and then build it. With every new project, I love to explore unfamiliar territories. Having the ability and autonomy to experiment and try new things is one of the best and most fulfilling aspects of being an artist. Recently, I have been projecting video on glass — which has been quite different from other mediums I’ve used in the past. ▲ “Starship 1,” 2022 Bringing Art Home With Samsung Art Store Q: You have been partnering with the Samsung Art Store since March 2023 in honor of Women’s History Month. What was that experience like? Being featured in the Samsung Art Store for Women’s History Month was exhilarating, fulfilling and incredibly rewarding. I received many congratulatory messages from friends, adding to the joy of the moment. Thanks to The Frame and Art Store, I am able to provide unparalleled accessibility to my art. This innovative technology benefits art enthusiasts and artists alike by opening a window to a world of art that may have been difficult to reach through traditional museums or art galleries. I am deeply appreciative of the opportunity to broaden my audience globally and reach more consumers in their homes. ▲ “Sassafrass,” 2021 Q: How did you select the works that are currently displayed in the Art Store? Can you recommend some of your favorite pieces to The Frame users? Growing up in an increasingly digital world full of technological advancements, I have always embraced technology as an integral part of my artistic journey and an innovative way to express myself. When considering which pieces to display, I carefully choose those that would be most visually appealing on a digital screen. I worked with curator Daria Brit Greene and we selected artwork that would appeal to The Frame’s vibrant and life-like screen. While it was challenging to pick my favorites, the first piece I recommend would undoubtedly be “Daydreams of Paper Animals.” This particular artwork is a digital collage I made for a large mural at a public school in the Queens neighborhood of New York City. We printed it on tile and added hand-built details that the students could touch! Making public art is very different from making work for museums — in a way, the primary audience is the people who will interact with the pieces every day. So, I tried to get into the mindset of the kids, think about what they care about and then amplify those ideas. Imagination, or the ability to problem-solve complicated situations through creativity, is incredibly important. This artwork encourages the children to tap into that imaginative potential and inspires them to daydream when they interact with the mural every day. ▲ “Daydreams of Paper Animals,” 2017 The second piece would be the “Encyclopedia of Cloud Divination,” a captivating digital collage that was made into limited-edition prints. These pieces were the beginning of a process I now use quite often in my work. I combined traditional print methods with digital print processes to create a unique composite of the two worlds. What do you think the future will look like? Throughout my artistic journey, technology has been an indispensable tool — from software like Photoshop to AR and VR for immersive video installations. I don’t have a definitive answer as to what the future of art will look like because I believe it will depend on how each artist integrates technology within their pieces. However, I do like the idea that art can be made more accessible through technology, just like how Samsung is doing. Q: Can you tell us about any upcoming projects? I am excited to announce a solo survey showcasing 20 years of my artwork at the Museum of Art and Design in New York in 2025! Please stay tuned for this exclusive exhibition. As part of the ViewFinity S9 Story series (see part 1 with DEVSISTERS and part 2 with OIMU here), Samsung Newsroom sat down with Emmy-winning artist Mike Perry, whose artistic explorations cover a broad spectrum, from the vivid and colorful paintings to whimsical animations and beyond, to talk about how his ViewFinity S9 fits into his creative process. ▲ Mike Perry Mike Perry is an Emmy-winning multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He is known for his vibrant and imaginative paintings that often encourages viewers to see the world from a fresh perspective. His works often feature playful characters, fluorescent color palettes and intricate patterns, transforming everyday reality into a dreamlike landscape that pushes the boundaries of creativity. Q: Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Oh, hi. I’m Mike Perry. I’m an artist based in New York. I make all kinds of crazy, fun, colorful things — paintings, drawings, animations — and work with incredible clients. I’m living the dream. It’s bright here, but not as bright as this beautiful monitor. Welcome to my studio! Q: What role does your monitor play in your creative process? The monitor is everything. I use it constantly. It’s like a part of my eyeballs. It allows you to see the things you’re making. You can see how they come to life. And you just want them to be as beautiful and true to what’s actually there in the real world. When I’m making a painting, I use it for the final step in the process. Basically, you know, color correcting and taking different elements to make sure my images feel as rich and true as possible. When I work digitally, the monitor is basically just the same thing as the canvas. The monitor is essential. It’s everything. Q: What’s the first thing that stood out when you saw the ViewFinity S9? The first thing that popped out with the ViewFinity S9 was immediately just the color itself. It’s just bananas. I’m kind of obsessed with fluorescent colors. I can’t stop using them. Color is such an important part of my existence. Just look at how rich and bright, lush and gooey the beautiful monitor is. It was just incredible to turn the thing on and just watch it, poof, glow. I was also impressed with how easy it was to just turn on and use. The benefit of making paintings and being a painter is that I’m not always in front of a computer, so when I just popped it open out of the box, it was easy to put together and turn it on. And it just works. Q: What does a Pantone Validated1 monitor mean to creatives? I love Pantone colors. It’s been really great to see how true to life the Pantone Swatches are to the monitor. I mean, the Pantone book is definitely like a color bible. It’s essential. But then, you’re always dealing with the reality of what’s on screen versus what you’re going to print with. You always have to take a leap of faith that it’s going to match up because the digital to print world is so mysterious. So, it’s just been really lovely to know that what I’m looking at is the same as the color on the swatches. It’s incredible. Q: Speaking of color accuracy, have you tried the Smart Calibration feature? What did you think of it? I love the Smart Calibration feature.2 It was so easy to use, and the app is so straightforward. You want things to represent themselves in the truest form so that you know what you’re creating is going to translate across multiple platforms and different mediums. I love that I’m able to make sure that the colors are represented the way that I want them to be. That’s such a nice guarantee. Q: What other features help bring your artistic visions to life? One of the headaches that is given to digital artists is working widescreen versus 9:16. In normal screens, you can only see a little bit of 9:16 so it’s such a bummer. So, being able to turn the screen and see the image the way it’s supposed to is just amazing! The Matte Display has been so lovely. The sun comes in the morning and pops through the windows, and it’s my favorite part of the day but it just smashes right into my screen. It’s just been lovely to not have sunlight disrupt my process and not have to step away from my computer while the sun is doing its beautiful thing. I also have The Frame TV at home, so I’m quite used to the Matte Display at this point. Q. What else can you tell us about your ViewFinity S9 monitor? Lastly, the camera is great. The angle is really nice and I love this security guard. If I want to talk to somebody, I can jump on, and if not, then I’m free. No one’s watching me. Q. Would you recommend ViewFinity S9 to other designers? I find it incredibly important to have a beautiful monitor. Something with a lot of resolution, something that’s going to give me the best that I can get and need for what I’m working on.
