  2. “Walking along the beach takes me back to my childhood, looking at reflections on the water and the way the horizon keeps changing” — Serge Hamad, photographer Serge Hamad is a visual storyteller whose multifaceted talents as a journalist, photographer and artist have informed the rich tapestry of his work. Having documented sociopolitical issues in war zones earlier in his career as a journalist, he now captures calm and serene seaside images as a photographer. Hamad’s work, including the highly acclaimed “Relax” series, captures tranquility in his signature style and also supports human rights groups with its impact. Born in the Mediterranean, Hamad has been profoundly influenced by his lifelong fascination with the sea. His photography, characterized by comforting and reflective qualities, has gained widespread recognition from global audiences. Since joining Samsung Art Store in 2020, his work has gained an even wider following as people have interacted with his art in new ways. This June, Samsung Art Store added two more of his notable pieces — “Beach #61” in the “Colors of Pride” collection and “Beach #64” in “Hello Summer.” In an interview with Samsung Newsroom, Hamad shared his creative process and how his background and life experiences shape his art, as well as the profound impact his evocative images have had on viewers. ▲ Serge Hamad An Artist’s Journey Q: Please describe your journey into the world of visual arts. What inspired you to move in that direction? Earlier in my career, I used photography and videography to document various sociopolitical issues as a war zone journalist. In 2011, I decided to shift my focus to capturing more sincere and lighthearted scenes with my lens. With the “Relax” series,1 my first body of work in fine art, I wanted to share peaceful and placid images with human rights organizations and support them with the proceeds. The public response well surpassed my expectations, so I decided to continue on this path. Q: Your “Relax” series is well known. What inspired you to shoot a series on the beach? I was born on the Mediterranean coast, and the sea has always fascinated me. Walking along the beach takes me back to my childhood. I used to love looking at reflections on the water and the way the horizon kept changing. My multicultural background, being half North African and half Westerner, has profoundly influenced my artistic vision and the themes I explore in my work. This unique blend of cultures allows me to draw from a rich tapestry of traditions and aesthetics, especially when it comes to colors. It has given me a broader perspective, enabling me to see and interpret the world through diverse lenses. Q: How do you make your beach photography so engaging? When it comes to capturing an engaging image, planning and timing are crucial. Planning is more than just checking the weather before a shoot — it’s also about selecting the right filming location. For example, I would go to a beach near a marina if I want a shot of a boat on the horizon. To capture a pelican diving into the sea, I would pick a specific beach and go there an hour before sunset. The rest of the atmosphere depends on human interactions with natural elements. Q: Why does the beach hold so much significance for you? Consistency is my top priority when developing a collection. I started the “Relax” series at the beach because it is one of the most relaxing places on the planet for millions of people, including myself. I enjoy working at the beach because it reminds me of both the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea from my childhood. “I started the ‘Relax’ series at the beach because it is one of the most relaxing places on the planet for millions of people, including myself.” Collaborating With Samsung Art Store Q: How do you choose which pieces to share with Samsung Art Store? What emotions or themes do you wish to share? I work with Samsung to select pieces that align with a particular themed curation because that way, I can focus on the message delivered to viewers. I strive to convey tranquility and harmony through my pieces on Samsung Art Store. Q: Samsung Art Store featured “Beach #61” and “Beach #64” in its June collections. Can you share the meaning behind these pieces? ▲ “Beach #61” (2023) “Beach #61” was shot in California. The rainbow-colored lifeguard house symbolizes tolerance. ▲ “Beach #64” (2023) “Beach #64” is more of a friendly invitation for the viewer to follow my footsteps on a walk at the beach. Q: Of all the works you’ve made available on Samsung Art Store, what are your three favorites? I’d have to choose “Beach #4,” “Beach #37” and “Beach #32.” All three photographs show how humans share nature with seabirds. ▲ “Beach #4” (2011) “Beach #4” uses a minimalistic approach to convey serenity with natural lines and colors. Before taking this photo, I wondered who would call a taxi to go surfing. It was only when the car approached that I realized it was a lifeguard vehicle. ▲ “Beach #37” (2016) I couldn’t resist capturing this scene of a seagull resting on a dune that looked like a charcoal painting. ▲ “Beach #32” (2014) Even if the seagulls in “Beach #32” had left and weren’t in the shot, we would still know that they had shared the dune with humans and enjoyed it together. The footprints of both humans and birds on the same dune symbolize their different influences on nature. “Embracing culture in our homes is always a great idea, and The Frame does just that.” Embracing the Future Q: As an artist, how do you feel about the impact of technology on the art world? Technology has always impacted my work and influenced my approach to photography. As a photographer, I use various tools every day to express myself — and different situations and subjects calls for different tools. Improving technology means giving artists more powerful capabilities to express themselves, so I embrace both analog and digital tools. In my opinion, artists in all kinds of disciplines have always benefited from innovations. During my career as a photographer, I have seen the popularization of imaging technology to a level that made it accessible to everyone. I believe this has created new artists and will continue to do so. The main thing to keep in mind, though, is that technology is a tool. The artistic process happens in your own mind. Q: How do you believe your collaboration with Samsung Art Store and The Frame has changed the way people appreciate art in their homes? The Frame is a brilliant concept, making art more accessible to a wider audience. Embracing culture in our homes is always a great idea, and The Frame does just that. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers? I’m working on a new series called “A table here, a table there.” I plan to spend a few months traveling along the U.S. West Coast to produce it and hope to share the collection by the end of this year. 1 All the “Beach” artwork on Samsung Art Store are part of the “Relax” series. 4. “Tizen is a homegrown platform that continues to evolve” – Jeongsik Cheon, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics Viewers around the world have come to expect more from their TVs. Today, people don’t just flip through channels but also use TVs to access streaming services, workout routines and social media. They even connect their home appliances to their TVs, expanding what used to be a viewing device into the centerpiece of a smart home ecosystem. These new experiences require open collaboration with service providers and greater compatibility with a plethora of devices. So 10 years ago, Samsung’s Visual Display Business made the bold decision to forgo its tried-and-true closed operating system (OS) and create an open one. That open OS is Tizen. ▲ Since its launch in 2015, Tizen has become a dominant OS for smart TVs. Hundreds of millions of TVs now feature Tizen, which is poised to bring more artificial intelligence (AI) features into the fold. Five developers from Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business recently shared behind-the-scenes stories with Samsung Newsroom about how they revolutionized the TV experience. Kwangsub Byun, Jeongsik Cheon and Youngsoo Kang helped the transition to Tizen a decade ago. Sunyong Jung and Seoyoung Hwang currently fine-tune Tizen for Samsung’s TVs. ▲ (From left to right) Youngsoo Kang, Jeongsik Cheon, Kwangsub Byun, Sunyong Jung and Seoyoung Hwang New Wine, New Wineskin First deployed in 2011, Orsay was the stable, proven OS that Samsung used for its TVs. As a closed platform, Orsay followed the traditional TV model — focusing on effectively handling signals from each physical input with additional services largely depending on features planned, designed and programmed prior to shipment. A closed operating system is completely owned and controlled by its primary developer testing, maintenance and quality management easier. But this very exclusivity makes it hard for external players to make contributions. ▲ The evolution of Samsung’s TV operating systems In contrast, the source code in an open operating system is available to the public and can be more freely modified and distributed. This makes it easier to attract third-party developers as well as create and share development tools. Tizen is an open platform, running on open-source software. This openness was the main reason Samsung decided to make the switch, explained Byun. “The concept behind Tizen was to bring in various outside developers and expand the ecosystem,” he said. Rather than imagine and create each and every new TV experience, Samsung would commit to its philosophy of open collaboration. ▲ Youngsoo Kang explains the differences between Orsay and Tizen. Another difference between the two operating systems is the mode of processing, Kang explained. Tizen is capable of carrying out multiple operations simultaneously, whereas Orsay only handled one task at a time. Kang used a transportation analogy to explain the difference. Orsay is like a bus that many people share, even though each passenger has a different destination. “Each person boards the bus with their luggage,” he said. “When one rider encounters a challenge, everyone on the bus is affected.” Tizen, on the other hand, is more like a road that people travel on in their own vehicles. “Everyone has their own ride,” Kang continued. “If one driver has a problem, it doesn’t affect the other drivers on the road. Each driver can solve their own problems.” For a smart TV — which must be flexible enough to meet customers’ varied needs — he said Tizen’s multiprocessing capabilities make it a more efficient choice. “I wondered why we had to take such a tough path when our TV business was doing well with Orsay. But looking back, Tizen was the right way.” – Youngsoo Kang, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics A Leap of Faith Buy-in was one thing, but execution was another. A fundamental change such as an OS switch is no small endeavor. Tizen’s multiprocessing design presented several technical complications, and having to comply with open standards added to the challenge. The team was under significant pressure. “We knew there would be no turning back,” said Byun. “And we were all in. We were going to apply Tizen to all our models, not just some of them.” Compared to the development of Orsay, not only were processes such as coding, testing and quality checking totally altered, but the sheer number of people involved in the project increased as well. Many of them worked in different time zones. Yet, there were also advantages to changing to an open-source platform. For one, the work proceeded faster with each step. “When developing Orsay, developers had to generate lines of code one by one and wait for hours to run simulations,” he added. “Working overnight was a daily routine. We told each other that it was like working with a stone ax.” With open-source modules and development tools to work with, building Tizen for Samsung TVs became a faster process. ▲ (From left) Orsay developers Youngsoo Kang, Jeongsik Cheon and Kwangsub Byun To maximize the advantage of an open-source platform, the Tizen team focused on creating a streamlined environment for the developers, publishing the application programming interface (API) and using open standards. The developers also made efforts to distribute software development kits (SDKs) while opening resources to make the architecture and licensing more accessible. As a result, Samsung Smart TV users now enjoy a wealth of external apps — such as Netflix, Spotify and Apple TV — in addition to Samsung’s own services. “The transition to Tizen was like breaking out of our shells,” said Kang, one of the more senior developers. “Sometimes I wondered why we had to take such a tough path when our TV business was doing well with Orsay. But looking back, Tizen was the right way. Now, I’m ready for the next step.” New Smart Experiences Through Tizen With Tizen, Samsung expanded its sphere of expertise in TVs beyond hardware to software and greatly impacted the TV ecosystem. Tizen is considered the ideal operating system to advance the smart home concept, since it not only connects devices to each other but also gives users access to a broad range of interconnected services and content. As of the end of 2023, Tizen powered 270 million Samsung Smart TVs — making it one of the most widely deployed operating systems in the TV industry. Given the positive feedback from the market, Jung couldn’t be more proud. “Samsung TVs are structured very intuitively,” said Jung. “When you look at the menu, you immediately understand the whole interface. There are only a few buttons to press or movements to make to arrange the settings as you want. We’ve drastically reduced the number of steps required to make Tizen superior to other operating systems.” ▲ (From left) Tizen developers Sunyong Jung and Seoyoung Hwang “Even though it’s an open-source platform, many advantages come from the fact that we developed it ourselves,” Jung continued. “We can freely try out new services and, when they’re ready, provide them right away. Samsung TV Plus is a great example of how we introduced a new streaming and video-on-demand service that’s streamlined with prior TV experiences that users are familiar with. We’re also receiving great feedback about the new Samsung Gaming Hub.” Tizen has also made smart TV services an important revenue stream. Samsung TV Plus and Samsung Gaming Hub complement TV sales by generating profit after sales, Jung explained. “We’re constantly making efforts to improve the platform and expand our lineup of licensed products to increase our market appeal,” he said. “Tizen is a home-grown platform that continues to evolve,” agreed Cheon, who took part in the transition from Orsay to Tizen. “I want to leave behind something meaningful to those who come after me.” – Seoyoung Hwang, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics Tizen as an AI Champion ▲ Seoyoung Hwang explains how Tizen will allow AI technology to shine. AI is becoming the focus of increasing attention in the tech industry. Hwang points out that Tizen played a key role in equipping TVs with AI functions. “Like upscaling, Samsung TVs have been using AI technology to improve picture and sound quality for many years,” she said. “The processing power and flexibility that Tizen provides is a big part of how that’s possible.” Thanks to Tizen and some dramatic hardware upgrades, Samsung TVs now offer more AI features that holistically improve the user experience. “2024 Samsung QLED 8K can recognize game genres and automatically set the best screen mode for a particular game,” she said. “The TV can also personalize content recommendations based on the user’s preferences.” AI functions on the Tizen platform will soon become more advanced and further heighten the user experience, she added. Since its launch, Tizen was a flexible operating system that supported various other form factors. For Samsung’s Visual Display Business, smart TVs and monitors, beam projectors and business-to-business signage products like The Wall add to the list of Tizen-powered devices. Jung says that newer devices, such as the AI companion Ballie, will also be equipped with Tizen. “We can use the high-performance computing resources embedded in Ballie as an edge device to complement various in-home uses,” Hwang said. “This is an exemplary case of using AI technology through hyperconnectivity. To provide various AI services, we need platform technologies such as cloud, on-device and edge. I think the Tizen platform will play a pivotal role in this regard.” Eyes Ahead to the Future of TV Tizen was born from a bold decision Samsung made to provide the best experiences to its users. This paved the way for smart TVs. Now, Samsung continues to help foster the use of AI across various form factors. ▲ (From left to right) Youngsoo Kang, Sunyong Jung, Byun Kwangsub, Jeongsik Cheon and Seoyoung Hwang When asked what Tizen meant to her, Hwang expressed respect for the developers at Samsung who took that initial leap of faith. “Embedded in Tizen is the wisdom of my senior colleagues who paved the way,” she said. “I want to leave behind something meaningful to those who come after me as well.” “I think of Tizen as a ladder to the future,” Jung added. “The possibilities are infinite.” View the full article

She has extensive art fair experience, having previously led the Gallery Weekend Berlin, Art Berlin (2016-2019) and Art Berlin Contemporary (2012-2016). Having worked as Communications Manager for Art Basel from 2008 to 2011, Cruse is well acquainted with the fair and the city of Basel’s cultural landscape. In her new role, Cruse oversees the fair’s operations and cultivates a vibrant network of relationships with the world’s leading galleries, collectors and artists, ensuring Basel remains a critical hub for the global art scene. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Cruse about the history of Art Basel and its ambitious future ahead of The Frame’s debut at the fair. ▲ Maike Cruse, Director of Art Basel, Basel Leadership and Vision at Art Basel Q: What are your key responsibilities at Art Basel and what motivated you to take on the role of director in Basel? As Director of Art Basel in Basel, I am leading our flagship fair, overseeing the Basel-based team and working closely with the fair’s network of galleries, collectors and artists as well as nurturing strong relationships with the city’s leading museums, institutions and cultural partners. I’m also collaborating closely together with the Directors of our other three fairs in Paris, Hong Kong and Miami Beach. When I rejoined as Director of Art Basel in Basel last July, I was thrilled by the opportunity to work with an exceptional, international team. Over the nearly past 20 years, I attended every Art Basel show and maintained an ongoing dialogue with the fair in my previous position as Director of Gallery Weekend Berlin. I am honored to lead this premier event in the vibrant art and culture hub of Basel and look forward to guiding its next chapter. Q: Could you share how you appreciate art in your daily life, both through your job and outside work? One great advantage of my job is that I am constantly surrounded by art – something I truly appreciate. Art continually inspires me, and I’m always seeking to discover new artists and projects. I am especially looking forward to all the discoveries I will make at this year’s fair in Basel, where over 250 galleries from 40 countries will once again showcase works of the highest quality. Q: Art Basel is such a pivotal event for artists and enthusiasts. Can you tell us a bit about the show and its significance? Art Basel, established in 1970 by gallerists from Basel, has evolved into the pinnacle of Modern and contemporary art exhibitions worldwide. Our engagement has expanded beyond art fairs through new digital platforms and initiatives like The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report, reflecting our commitment to innovation and the global art community. “I would advise our visitors to explore The Frame in Art Mode and observe the distinctions among various techniques and textures displayed on the screen.” Art Basel X The Frame: Offering New Ways of Accessing Artworks Q: How do you feel about The Frame becoming the first official visual display for Art Basel in Basel? In my view, the digital domain has the potential to enrich the tangible experience of art within our fairs. As fair organizers, our aim is to deliver the best possible fair experience for our international community of galleries, partners, visitors and collectors. This not only entails a rigorous selection process to ensure that the artworks meet our quality standards but also our commitment to integrating new technologies and services into our show. I am thrilled about this partnership and look forward to the first edition of Art Basel in Basel with The Frame as the official visual display. In addition to its ability to serve as a digital canvas, showcasing artworks from renowned artists and museum collections, The Frame accurately displays vivid color. The Frame’s minimal light reflection is a big bonus as well, ensuring a realistic and immersive presentation of art’s beauty. I am confident that our partnership with Samsung The Frame will elevate the show experience for our diverse audiences. The technology is remarkable, offering different perspectives on artworks and introducing new methods of displaying information, thereby improving wayfinding and minimizing paper consumption. ▲ Samsung The Frame became the first official visual display for Art Basel in Basel 2024. Q: Can you tell us about the The Frame Lounge? What can visitors expect from visiting the lounge? I am excited to see the lounge setup myself. It will feature The Frame in action amidst our bustling show floor. Especially the ‘Find The Frame’ section will be interesting – I’m curious to see how visitors react to this concept1 where original pieces of art and The Frame will be installed together. The Samsung lounge presenting the frame is to create an open space for exchange, experience and enjoyment, bringing new perspectives to today’s technological innovations. I would advise our visitors to explore The Frame in Art Mode and observe the distinctions among various techniques and textures displayed on the screen. The thematic selections on display in The Frame Lounge will enable visitors to dive into different scenarios of displaying art with Samsung The Frame. Of course, it is a great opportunity to experience classic Masterworks, but what is interesting to me too is that you can discover so many talented upcoming artists. “The growing intersection of technology and art is an interesting topic that is also widely discussed in the artworld now.” Expanding Creative Boundaries in the Digital World Q: How do you perceive technology’s impact on art, and what future trends do you foresee in this evolving field? Technology already has a profound impact on art and the art world. For example, technology has made art more accessible to a wider audience through various channels, such as the Samsung Art Store. Viewers can experience art in immersive ways, allowing them to interact and engage with it. Technology will continue to shape the ways the art world sees, presents and engages with art. Digital innovations have changed the way artists create art, as they increasingly use technology as a medium for their practice, incorporating software or even artificial intelligence. That’s what I love about art – it constantly evolves, with artists experimenting, tapping into new industries and pushing boundaries. The growing intersection of technology and art is an interesting topic that is also widely discussed in the art world now. As part of this year’s Art Basel in Basel Conversations program, we will host a panel between Ben Davis, National Art Critic Artnet News, New York and artist Cécile B. Evans to discuss the matter, taking place on Wednesday, June 12, at the Auditorium in Hall 1.0 with free admission to the public. Q: Looking ahead, what do you expect from The Frame and Samsung Art Store? I believe that technological initiatives have the potential to foster cultural exchange and inspire art enthusiasts worldwide. Through The Frame, Samsung has already established partnerships with renowned museums and cultural institutions, but also artists, thereby building bridges between various forms of artistic practices and mediums. I think collaboration with a diverse range of artists and art professionals is key to further establishing technological initiatives in the art industry. Unique Features and Programs at Art Basel in Basel Q: What are the distinctive features of Art Basel in Switzerland compared to Hong Kong, Paris and Miami Beach? Each of our shows is closely tied to its host city and region, creating distinct, localized experiences. Art Basel in Basel is our largest fair, featuring 285 galleries and an extensive public program. Paris has a strong French influence, Hong Kong showcases 50% Asian galleries and Miami Beach has a significant portion of the galleries coming from North and South America. These fairs complement each other, expanding our international network. ▲ A street view of Basel, Switzerland during Art Basel in Basel 2023 ▲ Visitors take in the world’s latest and greatest works at Art Basel in Basel 2023. Q: What unique aspects set Art Basel in Basel apart from other art fairs? Our fair in Basel is our flagship fair, the mothership – it is where galleries showcase their finest works, thanks to the very precise selection process of the selection committee. Basel remains a beloved and important city for arts and culture. It offers first-class exhibitions and unique museums and institutions, which leads to an intense and concentrated art experience. It has one of the oldest art museums in the world, the Kunstmuseum, as well as leading private foundations, notably the Fondation Beyeler and the pathbreaking Schaulager. The city’s intimate setting also allows for a close and immersive experience of the fair and all the cultural programming surrounding it. Q: Do you have any specific programs or content you would recommend for visitors? Our aim is to address a diverse audience, which is why we offer a generous public program besides our main fair. Our Parcours sector and the Merian are free to the public and very close to the fairground. Curated for the first time by Stefanie Hessler, Director of Swiss Institute (SI) in New York, Parcours will unfold along Clarastrasse up to the Middle Bridge, connecting the Messeplatz with the Rhine. Hessler’s concept for Parcours is a curated exhibition that meanders through empty stores and operational shops, a hotel, a restaurant, a brewery and other quotidian spaces on Basel’s Clarastrasse. Our Conversations program is celebrating its 20-year anniversary this year and will again bring together thought leaders across the art world to discuss the current issues of our time. Besides our show program, the local institutions host exhibitions that cannot be missed, such as the Summer Show at the Fondation Beyeler or the special exhibition of 100 years of Pan-African art in the Kunstmuseum. This is one of the unique features of Basel – you find first-class exhibitions and cultural events across the city within walking distance or at most a tram ride away. This year, Art Basel in Basel will run from June 13 to 16 at Messe Basel. Visitors are invited to explore the latest masterpieces from around the world, as well as remarkable works of Modern and contemporary art at Samsung The Frame Lounge, as industry tastemakers share their ideas. 1 Visitors can experience the challenge of distinguishing between original art pieces and The Frame. Thanks to The Frame’s Matte Display and artful color expressions, visitors can appreciate the details of the artwork. While artworks in the real frame stay still, the artworks on The Frame changes, and visitors will be able to notice it’s a TV. View the full article
  11. Game, work and relax. For those who want a monitor that does it all, Samsung Electronics presents the Odyssey OLED G8. Samsung Newsroom invited “Gamer S” to preview the Odyssey OLED G8 with a walk-through of a day in her actual life. S describes herself as a “jack of all trades” gamer. From FPS, RTS and RPG, to racing and sports games, she plays across all platforms, including PC and consoles. She also likes to watch professional gamers play just as much as she enjoys playing herself. Let’s take a look at Gamer S’ day with the Odyssey OLED G8. ▲ Snap-on stand doesn’t require additional parts or dedicated tools. Upon first glance in the morning, the Odyssey OLED G8 is quite the spectacle. Its super slim metal design measuring draws immediate attention as it measures 3.9mm at its thinnest point. Even though it is a 32-inch monitor, it does not take up much space thanks to its slim design, so it can be conveniently placed anywhere. The unique silver color harmonizes with peripherals like controllers, PCs and consoles, plus mice and keyboards. ▲ An ultra-slim metal design You can adjust the monitor to fit your posture for comfortable gameplay. The Odyssey OLED G8 provides ergonomic adjustments, including height, tilt, rotation and pivot, to prevent pressure on your body during long play time. ▲ Samsung Odyssey OLED G8(G80SD) FPS games are the answer to getting your hands ready for a day of gaming and entertainment. The basic formula for FPS games is to catch your opponent off guard, and overwhelm them before they even realize what is happening. Lightning quick response speed and refresh rate are vitally important in a monitor when playing FPS games. The Odyssey OLED G8 has a 4K UHD resolution that gives you the advantage when searching for enemies. S enjoys the edge that comes from a 240Hz refresh rate and a 0.03ms(GtG) response speed. ▲ Enjoy ‘The FINALS’ with the Odyssey OLED G8 featuring 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response time(GtG), while offering users an edge in fast-action gaming. Core Lighting+ on the back of the monitor is also something you don’t want to miss out on. It provides a more immersive ambiance to the gaming environment. With the CoreSync function, the monitor’s rear lights change color, mimicking the games scenes’ colors. This creates a more dramatic gaming environment and extends the mood and colors of your game to the outside world. ▲ Upgraded Core Lighting+ provides a more immersive ambiance to the gaming environment. The impressive visual value of the Odyssey OLED G8 can be witnessed in RPG games with dark backgrounds and contrasts. The Odyssey OLED G8 helps you fully immerse yourself in the gaming world, as it displays brilliant graphics, superior brightness of 250 nits(typ) and a wide DCI-P3 99% color gamut. Every scene comes alive in vivid detail with the consistently brilliant imagery. Especially in Game mode, the Dynamic Black Equalizer automatically increases the visibility of dark areas, while still maintaining bright zones. This enables gamers to uncover every secret while experiencing the best visuals a game has to offer. Players can spot hidden enemies in the dark as they can see through the shadows with purer dark levels. You can even find small details hidden in the shadows without pixel light bleed, providing incredible color and depth in every game. There is no need for any additional actions or tinkering with the settings. All you have to do is focus on the game. ▲ Play ‘SOLO LEVELING: ARISE’ with 4K OLED and experience a brighter, more detailed world. For too long, external light sources such as natural sunlight or ambient lighting have reflected off the monitor to disrupt gameplay. The Odyssey OLED G8 however, applies ‘OLED Glare Free’ technology to minimize light reflection. It delivers vivid and clear colors, even without a monitor hood. With a screen 54% less glossy than conventional Anti-Reflection film, you can see your full game environment and focus solely on gameplay. ▲ The Odyssey OLED G8 minimizes light reflection through its OLED Glare Free technology. High-end games require the highest performing graphic cards. However, these graphics cards generate large amounts of heat. Gamers want to keep their devices performing at their peak. But the longer they play, the greater their concerns are of the heat and burn-in. The Odyssey OLED G8 is built with Dynamic Cooling System, which evaporates and condenses coolant to diffuse the monitor’s heat five times better than the previously used graphite sheet method. So the Odyssey OLED G8 reduces temperature at the core. Also, with Thermal Modulation System,1 the algorithms predict surface temperature and automatically control brightness accordingly to reduce heat. The Odyssey OLED G8 is the first monitor in the world to apply a Pulsating Heat Pipe that prevents burn-in. ▲ The Dynamic Cooling System and Pulsating Heat Pipe The Odyssey OLED G8 has built-in Smart TV apps that allow users to enjoy various streaming services as well as Samsung TV Plus, Samsung’s FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV). 12. Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its 2024 Odyssey OLED gaming monitor, Smart Monitor and ViewFinity monitor lineups. These new and updated models bring features that people want — as well as some they don’t expect — to deliver new experiences, no matter how they use their monitors. The Odyssey lineup brings a next-level OLED experience and new AI capabilities1 to the Odyssey OLED G8; the Smart Monitor lineup heightens joy with more enhanced entertainment features, plus the Smart Monitor M8 powered by AI; and the ViewFinity lineup boosts connectivity to create a complete workstation. “Our latest monitor lineups deliver a breadth of options to users globally and create better experiences, no matter how people use them,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “From the groundbreaking AI-powered Odyssey OLED gaming monitor to multi-device experiences in the Smart Monitor and ViewFinity lineups, Samsung remains committed to redefining the market and delivering cutting-edge technologies to users everywhere.” Odyssey OLED Series: Visual Excellence With New Burn-In Prevention Features The 2024 Odyssey OLED models expand Samsung’s offerings of next-generation OLED performance with the new Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD model) and Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SD model). The Odyssey OLED G8 is the first flat 32” Samsung OLED gaming monitor with 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. It has a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time for ultra smooth and responsive gameplay. The Odyssey OLED G6 is a 27” QHD (2560 x 1440) resolution monitor, supporting a 16:9 aspect ratio. Its 360Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms GtG response time make it easy for gamers to keep up with fast-moving gameplay. The new Odyssey OLED G8 is Samsung’s first OLED gaming monitor powered by AI. The NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, which is the same processor Samsung uses in its 2024 8K TV, upscales content to nearly 4K when using Samsung Gaming Hub2 and the monitor’s native Smart TV apps for higher resolution in gaming and entertainment.3 Both new OLED models feature Samsung OLED Safeguard+, a new proprietary burn-in protection technology. This technology is the first in the world to prevent burn-in by applying a pulsating heat pipe to the monitor. Additionally, the Dynamic Cooling System evaporates and condenses a coolant to diffuse heat five times more effectively than the older graphite sheet method, which prevents burn-in by reducing temperature at the core. The monitor also detects static images like logos and taskbars, automatically reducing their brightness to provide another means of burn-in prevention.4 The Odyssey OLED G8 and OLED G6 both deliver unmatched OLED picture quality with a brightness of 250 nits (Typ.), while FreeSync Premium Pro keeps the GPU and display panel synced up to eliminate choppiness, screen lag and screen tearing. Samsung’s new OLED Glare Free technology5 also preserves color accuracy and reduces reflections while maintaining image sharpness to ensure an immersive viewing experience, even in daylight. The OLED-optimized, low-reflection coating overcomes the trade-off between gloss and reflection thanks to a new, specialized hard-coating layer and surface coating pattern. Both monitors feature a super slim metal design that gives them a distinct identity, while Core Lighting+ enhances entertainment and gaming experiences with ambient lighting that synchronizes with the screen. The ergonomic stand also makes long sessions more comfortable with adjustable height, plus tilt and swivel support. The new Odyssey OLED monitors are the next entry to expand Samsung’s OLED monitor market leadership. Their release comes after Samsung achieved the top position in global sales in the OLED monitor market within only one year of launching its first OLED model.6 This achievement underscores Samsung’s rapid ascent in the competitive landscape of OLED monitors while reinforcing its commitment to diversifying its gaming monitor lineup with models that leverage the company’s proprietary OLED technology. Smart Monitor M8: AI Processing for Crystal Clear Video and Audio The updated Smart Monitor lineup brings together a complete multi-device experience into one hub for smarter entertainment and greater productivity. The upgraded 2024 models include the M8 (M80D model), M7 (M70D model) and the M5 (M50D model). The upgraded 32” 4K UHD Smart Monitor M8 introduces new features powered by AI with the NQM AI processor, taking entertainment experiences to the next level. AI upscaling brings lower resolution content up to nearly 4K,7 and Active Voice Amplifier Pro uses AI to analyze background noise in the user’s environment to optimize dialogue in the user’s content.8 360 Audio Mode9 is available on the M8, which pairs with Galaxy Buds to create an immersive sound environment. The built-in SlimFit Camera also makes it easy to conduct video calls through mobile applications with Samsung Dex.10 New to the entire line of Smart Monitors is a Workout Tracker,11 which pairs with a Galaxy Watch to enable real-time health data on the screen, even while streaming content. This makes it easier to track workout goals and can make working out more enjoyable. These new features enhance the already impressive Smart Monitor functionality. Smart TV apps and Samsung TV Plus12 provide instant access to a wide range of streaming services and live content, without needing to boot up a PC or connect to other devices.13 The M7 is available in 32” and 43” with 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution, a brightness of 300 nits (Typ.) and a gray to gray (GtG) response time of 4ms. The M5 is available in 27” and 32”, with FHD resolution (1920 x 1080), a brightness of 250 nits (Typ.) and a GtG response time of 4ms. ViewFinity Series: Maximizing Creativity and Ease of Use Optimized for creatives and professionals and built with responsible practices, the latest ViewFinity lineup includes the ViewFinity S8 (S80UD and S80D models), ViewFinity S7 (S70D model) and the ViewFinity S6 (S60UD and S60D models). The updated 2024 ViewFinity monitors14 help recycling efforts by being made with a minimum of 10% recycled plastic and not applying chemical sprays to the plastic components.15 The packaging also uses glue instead of staples for easier disassembly. The Easy Setup Stand is put together with one quick click, requiring no tools or screws, making it fast and easy to set up and enjoy the ViewFinity’s vibrant display. Every 2024 ViewFinity monitor supports HDR10 and the display of 1 billion colors, ensuring accurate color representation, while also integrating TÜV-Rheinland-certified Intelligent Eye Care features to alleviate eye strain during prolonged work periods. 13. “Bringing innovative design projects to mass production is a multi-step process that involves iterative exploration and trial and error. The Music Frame project is the culmination of positive energy and passionate collaboration across our design, development and CX teams since the summer of 2021.” — Chulyong Cho, Head of Design Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics Designing the Experiences of Tomorrow Samsung Electronics is home to forward-looking departments seeking untapped opportunities. True to its name, the Visual Display Business’ Future Experience Design group actively develops concepts for user experiences that are missing in the market before turning those ideas into innovative products. Launching a new product is no easy feat, however. There is a long journey ahead after proposing an initial concept — from designing for mass production and collaborating with other departments to enhancing marketability and perfecting the product’s technical aspects. Brought to fruition through unceasing passion and innovation, this is Music Frame and its design story. * Content images have been simulated for illustrative purposes only and may differ from the actual product. Product specifications may vary by country, region and model. Bringing Style to Spaces Inspired by Your Lifestyle Consumers are now opting to purchase products that seamlessly blend into their living spaces instead of ones that only offer functionality. To that end, Samsung has introduced a series of lifestyle TVs including The Serif, The Frame and The Sero. Since TVs are not in use most of the time, these products transition to Ambient or Art Mode to offer a tasteful design experience — rather than displaying a black screen. Delivering audio in the form of a picture frame, Music Frame is an extension of this approach. Setting itself apart from conventional speakers designed mainly to amplify sound, Music Frame and its concept of lifestyle audio prioritize the user’s lifestyle and living space. Picture frames are a familiar furnishing that can be placed anywhere, reflecting each individual’s taste and personality based on the kind of art being displayed. Music Frame draws inspiration from ordinary picture frames, allowing users to listen to music as they appreciate their favorite pictures. Breathing Life Into an Innovation In collaboration with the development and CX teams, Samsung designers built and tested a working prototype that demonstrated high-quality sound. They received positive responses from users after extensive testing, which solidified their confidence in the product’s acoustic performance and overall concept. As a result, the initial design remained intact and went into mass production. Bridging the Gap Between Decor and Audio Sculpting Unseen Sound Music Frame embodies audio, so Samsung couldn’t lose sight of how people enjoy listening to high-quality music. Given the product’s unique form factor compared to traditional, elongated soundbars, the designers worked closely with the sound development team to perfect acoustics from the get-go. Speakers commonly have fabric, grilles or other materials on the front to easily emit sound. Together with the sound development team, the designers found a way for Music Frame to amplify sound through a gap between the frame and panel — creating a design rarely seen in audio products. The result? A frame-shaped speaker that is not restricted by the material that covers the front side. Due to the frame’s shape, the gap between the bezel and the panel was important since this portion produces high- and medium-pitched sounds. After countless tests to find the optimal sized gap, both in terms of design and sound quality, the team settled on a width of 9mm. The designers worked with developers to make sure the vibrations from the rear woofer speaker — responsible for the bass — would not create noise when the product is hung on a wall like a picture frame. A Piece To Personalize Your Space Just like a real frame, Music Frame allows users to swap the images inside for personal photos or works of art. Listening to music while looking at a framed photo of a precious memory or a piece of art adds new levels of depth to users’ experiences. Samsung designers also considered users who might place the Music Frame on a table instead of hanging it on a wall. Meticulous refinements were made to the frame stand’s shape and angle to ensure it doesn’t look too prominent or cause reflections on the panel. Since the rear of the product is visible if placed on a table, the back was designed in a neat and minimal fashion. Music Frame in Your Everyday Your Life, in the Frame If there’s a particular image users want to cherish, they can create their own art panel by uploading an image to a third-party website and placing an order. Music Frame comes in a default black bezel, but users can purchase an additional white bezel to match their decor. They can fill their frames with stunning images to create a stylish space that is perfect for listening to music. * Art panels are sold separately and customization availability may vary by region. White bezels are sold separately and will become available starting in the summer of 2024. Fill Your Room With Rhythm For more captivating TV viewing, users can utilize Q-Symphony for richer stereo sound by placing two Music Frames on either side of their TVs. For surround sound, users can place a soundbar in front of their TV and a Music Frame on the opposite wall to act as a rear speaker. With the SmartThings app, users can set the equalizer settings to their preferences. By fine-tuning the audio, users can enjoy more vibrant sound and immersive content. * Q-Symphony using Music Frame is available only when connected to a 2024 Samsung TV (DU7000↑ & LS03D) or 2024 Samsung TV and 2024 Samsung Soundbar (Q700D↑, Ultra Slim, S-Series). Looking forward to a future of new possibilities, Samsung designers will continue to develop products and designs that naturally blend into users’ lifestyles and living spaces. View the full article

  15. “I hope that my work will allow people to say what is inside their hearts or on their minds when they don’t have the right words.” Carissa Potter describes herself as “a human longing for connection.” Through printmaking, writing and installations, she has pursued this meaningful goal of fostering interpersonal experiences. Her work spans various mediums, capturing the intricacies of such human experiences with emotional depth and resonance. Potter has held residencies at Facebook, Google and the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. Additionally, her pieces have been featured at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and Urban Outfitters. Through her company, People I’ve Loved, she has expanded her reach to over 600 stores worldwide. Her desire for meaningful connections is apparent in her work — which combines words with drawings to create pieces that deeply resonate with audiences. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Potter about her artistic journey and how she uses art to connect with people. ▲ Carissa Potter Artistic Identity and Philosophy Q: Please briefly introduce yourself. I am a person longing for connection. I write books, have conversations, create art installations and process emotions through text and images. My company, People I’ve Loved, has made objects to foster connections between humans and non-humans in Oakland, California, since 2012. Q: What inspires you the most in your creative work? There is so much joy in problem solving and thinking things through by creating something. From a very early age, I have asked myself deep questions that require these types of creative thoughts. What about humans make us want to stick through hard moments? How can meanings exist in a meaningless universe? Mirrors of Emotion as Themes and Narratives Q: Your openness in sharing personal thoughts and emotions adds a special layer of connection to your artwork. How has this transparency shaped your creations? For artwork to be visually interesting, there must be some kind of emotional relationship. I gravitate toward art that is somehow reflective of my own experience — almost like holding up a mirror to a life that I either want or have had. Whenever I make something that is hard, painful or beautiful, I have faith that the piece is comforting someone out there. “Anytime people are open, honest and vulnerable, there is a subconscious invitation for someone to return the sentiment.” In a visual sense, the idea of connection is most directly communicated using words and figuration. So, that is what I tend to lean on — telling stories that we long to hear, but somehow have had a hard time finding due to societal limitations on what we are allowed to feel. The idea that feelings are responses to external stimuli is emotionally liberating. We don’t have to judge ourselves as good or bad — we just exist and that makes us worthy in and of itself. ▲ Carissa Potter with her daughter Margaret Q: How do viewers typically respond to these deeply personal dimensions? Anytime people are open, honest and vulnerable, there is a subconscious invitation for someone to return the sentiment. I try hard to give people the benefit of the doubt and understand that I can feel this way and they can feel that way. Both perspectives hold value. Then, when someone says, “I feel that way too,” “I found your work when I was going through something so similar,” or “Your work helped me accept my broken self,” I just feel like a part of something greater than myself. “For artwork to be visually interesting, there must be some kind of emotional relationship.” Q: In your discussions on emotional granularity, you mention using art as a release for feelings you might not express otherwise. How does art provide a platform for these emotions? We often wish to say the right thing or do something better. However, our intentions and actions are so influenced by the situation that it is hard to be honest. Through art, you can convey feelings or sentiments about someone that you could never actually say. There is an emotional relief to honestly sharing something with someone you trust and having reciprocated intimacy. Carissa Potter x Samsung Art Store Q: “Winter Moon” was a favorite among Samsung Art Store users last winter. What inspires you to choose specific motifs for your seasonal pieces? If I had to guess why “Winter Moon” was popular, I’d say it’s because it is simple. We live in a complex world, and simple images are like a break for the mind. The imagery is comforting and melancholic at the same time, so there is a neutral emotional tone that I am attracted to. Winter is often portrayed as cold, dark and isolating, but the season can create moments of safety and connection. ▲ “Winter Moon” (2022) Q: “Bunny Love” and “Flowers for Mom” were featured in Samsung Art Store’s April and May curated collections. Why do you think these pieces resonated so strongly? At the end of winter, we search for new life — for energy, vitality and things to celebrate and look forward to. Both “Bunny Love” and “Flowers for Mom” are visual representations of what we long for and a reminder of what is in store. Seasonal rituals are important for understanding space and time. In many ways, that is what the images are doing for us — grounding us and telling us we are right where we need to be. ▲ “Bunny Love” (2024) “There is an emotional relief to honestly sharing something with someone you trust and having reciprocated intimacy.” Q: What are some other pieces you recommend users to display on their Frame TVs? During my episodes of depression, I found that tending to plants brings me joy. It is so simple and obvious —but, really for me, it was massively uplifting. “Plant Wall” features various black plants against a white background. This piece was part of my collaboration with SFMOMA. “A Family of Plants” is a group of plants in terracotta pots. “September Bloom” shows a woman seated with a bouquet of flowers. To me, plants represent the interconnected nature of being — they make you awe at the complexity of life. There is beauty and life everywhere. Working with plants makes me feel little, yet helpful. And sometimes feeling little is comforting. ▲ “Plant Wall” (2020) ▲ “A Family of Plants” (2024) ▲ “September Bloom” (2023) Exploring Art in the Digital Realm Q: How do you envision technology impacting the creation and distribution of art? I believe all art throughout time has been a collaboration with the available technology. But that is not a bad thing! It could be, but it is also just a reformatting of information and understanding. I can’t say for sure what everything will look like in the future, but it’s interesting to think about how we are directly harnessing human knowledge when we use emerging tech or AI. In some ways, it is giving form to the collective consciousness. Q: Have you seen any changes in how people engage or interpret art as digital mediums become more popular? I love flipping through art and seeing the diverse pieces humans have made. In art school, making something comfortable enough for someone’s home was sort of a faux pas. But now, I think it is valuable if someone likes something enough to want to live with it. Art is now a lot more democratic. It is magical to be able to enjoy artwork in your home that used to only be accessible in formal institutions. Your flesh and bone can be in one spot while your mind is in a completely different space surrounded by things and people you love. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share? I don’t think we discussed nostalgia. Recently, I pondered about why we keep objects. My brain tends to remember the hard things. From an evolutionary standpoint, this makes sense. If something is dangerous, I should remember it. Yet, there are things that I want to remember that don’t always fall into the neuropathways that serve me to not die — like the good things. Reminders of the sweetness of life, times of connection and joy are more important than ever in recognizing that there will be moments of pleasure again. I think art can do that and so much more.
