  1. Exciting news for gamers across the globe: Samsung Electronics has opened Odyssey Universe, a new customized map created in Fortnite, one of the most popular TPS (Third-Person Shooter) games with millions of players worldwide. The Odyssey Universe was inspired by the Samsung Odyssey monitor lineup, which takes gamers on a futuristic voyage with its unique identity and futuristic designs. Gamers can explore worlds in the Odyssey Universe, traveling in starlight and accomplishing missions in unique levels spread across the map. Popular Streamers SypherPK and NickEH30 Introduce the Odyssey Universe To celebrate the release of Odyssey Universe, Samsung invited world-famous streamers SypherPK and NickEH30 to explore the Odyssey Universe and interact with their fans worldwide. “It was a great map with amazing detail. Every mini-game played well and was exciting. It was great playing with Nick Eh 30 as we have collaborated plenty of times before!” – SypherPK “Playing the Odyssey Universe map with Sypher was so much fun! I have a Samsung Odyssey monitor, so seeing it in person and then in-game, recreated perfectly, was very cool! Five separate worlds are available from the lobby, each with a separate mission available. These worlds — Levels Ark, G9, G8, G7 and G6 — are inspired by and named after the Odyssey gaming lineup. ▲ Gamers begin in the lobby when they enter Fortnite’s Odyssey Universe map. Five worlds inspired by Odyssey monitors beckon. Let’s take a look at Level Ark. Level Ark offers a mission to escape from a maze by answering Odyssey-based questions. In order to unlock different pathways, players will have to use all the knowledge they have about Odyssey monitors. ▲ Odyssey Universe Level Ark. Gamers can escape from the maze only when they solve all the clues about the Odyssey series. Level G9 was inspired by the Odyssey Neo G9, an extremely large display that looks and feels like two monitors combined into one. In Level G9, gamers have to get a golf ball to land in the hole — which might sound easier than it is. An ultrawide 49-inch monitor like the Neo G9’s will help them smoothly complete the mission without too much stress. ▲ Odyssey Universe Level G9. Gamers are invited to test their mini-golf skills Level G8 features a racing track with plenty of curves, representing the curvature of the Odyssey Neo G8 (1000R) and Odyssey OLED G8 (1800R). Racing along the track opens new views of a vast 360° universe for an overwhelmingly immersive experience. Level G8 will provide a challenge, since it has two objectives: a time trial race and counting the number of monitors that appear next to the track while players race by. ▲ Odyssey Universe Level G8. A racing track with continuous curves makes gameplay more thrilling. To highlight a refresh rate that is essential for gaming monitors, Level G7 was designed as a shooting range. Gamers need to hit all their targets in a limited time, made easier with a refresh rate of up to 240Hz available on the high-end Odyssey monitors. And at Level G6, gamers need to collect tokens within an overwhelmingly huge shopping mall in a limited time. Gamers will see Odyssey gaming monitors in the stores and come across all the Samsung Odyssey monitors as they hunt their objectives. For gamers whose blood starts pumping at the thought of a thrilling experience created in Fortnite, Samsung Electronics has prepared a “scavenger hunt” event for gamers to dive into. By following SypherPK and NichEH30 on social media to get clues, players can explore the Odyssey Universe map to find hidden answers in each of the worlds. By submitting answers at the Odyssey Universe event website, they’ll be eligible to enter sweepstakes for Odyssey gaming monitors. 9. At CES 2023, Samsung Electronics presented Calm Technology services to its users through a variety of differentiated integrated connected experiences. Calm Technology refers to when a technology, through Samsung’s SmartThings platform, is able to automatically connect devices without any action required from the user. To realize this vision of Calm Technology, Samsung has obtained the industry’s first Circadian Rhythm Display (CRD) certification from the German testing and certification agency Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE). The certification was awarded to the Eye Comfort Mode feature of Samsung’s 2023 Neo QLED and Lifestyle TVs, The Frame, The Serif and The Sero.1 The concept of pairing circadian rhythm with display technologies might seem unusual. So what exactly inspired Samsung to pursue it, and what was the process like from planning through to development and certification? To learn more, Samsung Newsroom sat down with three professionals who made this recent CRD certification possible, Taehwan Cha of the Picture Quality Solution Lab, Gyuheon Lee of the Product Development Group and Beomkyun Rha of the Product Planning Group. ▲ (From left) Taehwan Cha of the Picture Quality Solution Lab, Gyuheon Lee of the Product Development Group and Beomkyun Rha of the Product Planning Group The Unique Combination of Circadian Rhythm and Display Technology The term “circadian” is derived from the Latin words “circa” (meaning “about”) and “diem” (meaning “day”). Human circadian rhythm can be described as the biological pattern of engaging in dynamic activities during the day and sleeping during the night as well as the secretion and inhibition of related hormones such as melatonin, cortisol and growth hormones that occur naturally according to this cycle. “We were ultimately working to find a way to achieve the best picture quality while also guaranteeing viewing safety,” noted Rha of why Samsung initially started focusing on circadian rhythm. “The result was the creation of Eye Comfort Mode, a feature which automatically optimizes picture quality based on changes in circadian rhythm.” One of the characteristics of Eye Comfort Mode is that it uses artificial intelligence (AI) to enable the most comfortable picture quality by automatically detecting changes in the viewing environment. Eye Comfort Mode adjusts the amount of blue light based on the local sunrise and sunset time as well as the surrounding lighting environment. By adjusting the screen’s luminance level and color, Eye Comfort Mode creates an effect similar to the different lighting styles that occur during daytime and nighttime, with lower luminance and color temperature aiding the user to sleep well. “Since Eye Comfort Mode sets the picture quality based on the surrounding viewing environment, the user can enjoy good picture quality without any quality degradation, even with less blue light,” explained Rha. “When planning our approach to CRD, it was extremely important that we could control the amount of blue light being emitted without affecting the picture quality, so we engaged in constant research and discussion with the development team and picture quality team right from the planning stages.” Eye Comfort Mode, the Secret To Picture Quality Optimization at All Hours of the Day As Eye Comfort Mode operates based on localized information to recognize sunrise and sunset times, it has to be able to harness regional geographic information of where the TV is placed. “The basic algorithm allows the TV to obtain and operate based on sunrise and sunset information from a regional weather application, which is identified based on the location information of the TV,” said Lee. “Thanks to this algorithm, users can watch TV with picture quality optimized to the changes in their circadian rhythms wherever they are in the world with Eye Comfort Mode.” In addition to local sunrise and sunset times, the surrounding lighting environment is essential to optimizing picture quality for CRD purposes. Accordingly, the light sensor built into the TV measures the amount of external light. Then it determines how bright or dark the viewing environment is to optimize picture quality for the user automatically. The CRD Certification, the Last Hurdle to Improving Reliability ▲ The 2023 Neo QLED TV is measured using a spectroradiometer, which measures a display’s luminance, chromaticity coordinates, spectrum and more. Once a technology is out of the planning and development stages, the last step in the process is to cement the value of the technology through certification from an external agency. For their CRD technology, as with all others, the certification process began with establishing the relevant objective and standardized criteria. Through an external collaboration project, Samsung discovered an index for circadian stimulus (CS) as defined by the U.S. Lighting Research Center. This CS index can quantitatively express the effect of Eye Comfort Mode in number form through association with a light source’s power to inhibit an individual’s melatonin secretion. Following this discovery, Samsung then developed a test project in collaboration with an external research institute and proceeded to set up a certification with VDE in order to obtain the CRD certification. To win the trust of our consumers, it is crucial that we can obtain certifications for our technologies from a credible agency,” explained Cha. “While ‘circadian rhythm’ may be a somewhat unfamiliar term, it was used even in the name of the certification to emphasize the intention and value add of the technology, which is to provide picture quality optimized based on circadian rhythm.” Delivering the Ultimate Viewing Experience to Users Despite being awarded the VDE certification, those working on the CRD technology are still determined to develop even more ways to bring users the best picture quality possible. “Since people have different picture quality preferences, my goal is to provide customizable picture quality based on personalized needs ultimately,” said Lee. For Rha, too, the next step is rooted firmly in personalization. “Display technologies have advanced significantly in recent years, and I think we have reached a point where the industry possesses a similar approach across the board,” he explained. “Going forward, I want to focus on and develop consumer-friendly features specific to each user.” Finally, for Cha, picture quality is a consideration that should be embedded in every aspect of development. “I always ask myself how I can create value in the TV features and performance technologies we design when working on external picture quality evaluation and certification,” he noted. “My goal is to embed such technologies and practices across all stages of our process, from product planning and development to the final stage of certification.” Going forward, Samsung is constantly striving to provide the ultimate viewing experience that considers viewing safety. In addition to the CRD certification the company recently received, the company also received “Eye Care” certification from VDE and “Glare-Free” validation from UL last year, a testament to the ongoing innovation journey Samsung is pursuing. 10. Samsung Electronics has been shaping the history of television through the development of its technological innovations, from FHD and 4K through to 8K, thanks to its far-sighted strategic vision and an endless passion to bring new technologies to the market. In order to learn more about the achievements made so far in the field of TV technological innovation, as well as the future of display technologies in the age of UHD screens, Samsung Newsroom sat down with TV experts. ▲ (From left) Sangmin Lee, Head of the Picture Quality Solution Lab, Hyunchul Song from the Product Development Group and Youngseok Han from H/W Platform Lab of Samsung’s Visual Display Business Pioneering the Future of TV Through Endless Innovation These days, picture quality has become one of the most crucial factors consumers consider when choosing a TV. In 1977, Samsung succeeded in the development and mass production of a color TV, the Color Economy TV, for the first time in Korea, ushering in the era of color television for the country. Samsung earned the title of the first color TV manufacturer in Korea thanks to its steadfast dedication to innovation, and the company was never complacent about the colossal success of its black and white TV model, the Econo TV, which took the lion’s share within the monthly TV market at the time. ▲ Samsung’s first LED TV, launched in 2009, wowed the world as a breakthrough in TV technology. Next to be developed was the LCD TV, and, in 2009, Samsung unveiled its breakthrough model — the Samsung LED TV. The LED TV was the culmination of all the innovative technologies available at the time, allowing for unrivalled picture quality brought about by light-emitting diodes. All components of Samsung’s LED TV were designed anew, and the number of patents acquired for this model exceeded 3,000. ▲ Samsung’s QLED TV made its global debut at CES in 2017. In 2017, Samsung then went on to introduce the world’s first QLED TV based on cadmium-free quantum dot technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company’s innovative TV was at the center of attention that year, boasting superb picture quality and 100% color volume. A year later, the company brought to the market a QLED 8K model that incorporated 8K resolution into Samsung’s proprietary quantum dot technology. It featured Direct Full Array, a backlight technology able to precisely control the lighting balance across every part of the picture on-screen, as well as 8K AI Upscaling, an upscaling technology designed to intelligently upgrade lower-quality videos into vivid 8K resolution, for the first time in the industry. Samsung’s innovative QLED 8K technologies are what launched the era of 8K. “In 2020, Samsung unveiled the world’s first bezel-less TV that completely removed the bezels from around the display,“ said Hyunchul Song from the Product Development Group. “A year later, we further solidified our position as an industry leader by introducing our Neo QLED technology based on Quantum Mini LED displays. From FHD through to 8K, we have undertaken ceaseless efforts to develop innovative products that offer differentiated experiences based on consumer needs.” Striving for Superior Picture Quality Through In-Depth Research Into Human Behavior Samsung continues to strive to offer the best possible viewer experiences by delivering leading picture quality. However, what does “good picture quality” mean to someone who works on its development? “Picture quality is considered good when it delivers a sense of reality to the viewer that feels as if you are witnessing the images on-screen first-hand,” explained Youngseok Han, a developer from the H/W Lab. “To ensure good picture quality, display performance indicators such as high resolution, high luminance and excellent color expression are essential. What also matters is how well-balanced the other cutting-edge technologies of the display are, including the chip design, the picture quality algorithms and the sound.” Han went on to provide further insight into the importance of balance to the corresponding picture quality. “The factors that impact picture quality the most are how well you organize the various relevant technologies. These include those designed to reduce distortion and any image transmission noise, those that reproduce colors precisely and richly and create sharp contrast for more vivid, clear images and those motion technologies that ensure the movement of objects on-screen appears smooth and fluid.” It would be impossible to develop good picture quality with just one singular technology, no matter how great that technology is. This is why Samsung is committed to developing innovative technologies through all kinds of different approaches without resting on their laurels as a leader in the industry. Recently introduced on the 2023 Neo QLED TV, Real Depth Enhancer is one of the new features that has been developed to the end of further improving picture quality. When human eyes are focused on an object, attention is directed onto the object by optimizing sharpness, clarity and texture, all while also maintaining the background scene. Samsung’s Real Depth Enhancer technology was developed based on an understanding of this human behavior, and harnesses AI to automatically separate an object from its background to create a greater sense of depth and make the images truly pop. Furthermore, Neo Quantum Matrix Pro technology improves the playback of fine details through precise control of the quantum mini LEDs across a total of 13,684 levels. This meticulous adjustment further adds dimension and a sense of reality to the images on-screen. “Our Real Depth Enhancer technology is the result of an optimization of all the relevant technologies in a way that takes human psychology into account, instead of focusing only on improving resolution,” noted Han. From 8K Games to Artworks on Samsung TVs in the Age of 8K Technology These days, users are being bombarded by new content. Tens of thousands of new pieces of media and content are being published every day across all manner of platforms — but does the same apply for those contents being made in 8K? “Following the recent growth of 8K devices including smartphones, anyone is able to create 8K content and view it in ultra-high resolution,” said Sangmin Lee, Head of the Picture Quality Solution Lab. “High-performance graphics cards also now make it possible for users to play 8K games, meaning that we are already living in the age of 8K UHD.” Song further detailed the growth of 8K content in today’s viewing market. “There is a growing amount of 8K content available on social media channels, and artists are creating digital artworks in 8K,” he explained. “We added in ‘YouTube Videos in 8K’ feature to the 2023 Neo QLED TV to allow users to peruse the 8K content available on YouTube and explore digital artworks, such as an image in NFT1 form, at a single glance.” Samsung is also taking the lead in expanding the 8K content ecosystem by being at the helm of the 8K Association, a global non-profit organization established in 2019 with the aim of establishing 8K standards and expanding 8K content. As of February 2023, the association has 33 members, including Samsung, TV panel producers, SoC chip makers and leading content creators. Last year, Samsung released a teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series in 8K developed in collaboration with Amazon Prime Video, another member of the 8K Association. Developing Optimal Picture Quality That Takes Viewing Experiences to the Next Level In order to learn more about the next steps for industry leader Samsung in terms of picture quality in the age of 8K technology, Samsung Newsroom asked the three TV professionals what their goals are. “As a developer, I feel the most accomplished when I hear the feedback that viewers think the images on-screen seem real to them,” said Han. “My goal is to further improve our algorithms by optimizing a range of components in order to deliver picture quality that is ‘more real than real’ to viewers.” For Song, creating technologies that bring real value to users is of the utmost importance. “While the development department works to create the best picture quality through technological innovation, I am more involved in optimizing products to bring high-quality experiences to as many viewers as possible,” said Song. “I will continue to deliberate on what other kinds of user value we can bring to our viewers.” Finally, from Lee’s perspective, the goal is and always has been to provide users with experiences that go beyond simply watching content. “The most important value that a display can provide is to present images that seem more real than reality itself,” explained Lee. “Through the best picture quality algorithms and leading sound performance, the optimal picture quality that is delivered then allows users to enjoy their favorite content without having to worry about adjusting the settings. Our ultimate goal is to offer superb picture quality that enables users to thoroughly enjoy their viewing experiences that go beyond simply watching content.” Stay tuned to Samsung Newsroom for the second and final part in this series highlighting the role of the 8K TV and the innovative technologies Samsung has been developing to provide the best possible viewing experiences to its users. 1 SAVAGE is a high quality NFT marketplace featuring 4K/8K video and photography. One of these partners, Noah Kalina, is a photographer who finds that technology such as the Art Store can help connect artists to their audiences in new and previously unimaginable ways. ▲ Noah Kalina Samsung Newsroom sat down with Noah, whose work focuses primarily on the passage of time, to discuss how his work has changed through the years and what the future of display technology might have in store. The Stories Behind Noah Kalina’s Work Q: What drew you to a career as an artist, particularly as a photographer? In high school, I developed a passion for photography and attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where I received my BFA in photography. After college, I worked as a freelance editorial and commercial photographer, photographing portraits, landscapes and architectural interiors for various magazines and companies. By being exposed to different people and places, my personal projects were then influenced, and my commercial work allowed me to pursue my own art practice. Q: Where do you find creative inspiration now? I still turn to social media platforms to discover new work and find inspiration. I like to see what my friends and fellow artists are working on, so I tend to visit those websites on a daily basis to draw inspiration. Movies are another source for my future projects, and I watch at least four or five movies a week. I take long drives and listen to music because I can think about and conceptualize new ideas there. I also constantly flip through my art book collection to discover more obscure references. Q: Others have described your work as “capturing the passage of time,” largely due to your well-known Everyday project that documented your face everyday for 20 years. How would you describe your own work? I have always been interested in the passage of time; over the years, much of my work has been conceptually related to that theme. I love to observe how people and places subtly change over time, which can be seen in a number of my series, from Everyday to Lumberland to The River. I’d describe my work as subtle, quiet, slow and beautiful but with a little bit of humor! ▲ The River / 20220107 (2022) Noah Kalina X Samsung Art Store Q: What is the story behind your partnership with the Art Store? A friend of mine, Cody Cobb, whose work I greatly admire, had pieces in the Art Store. When I first saw his work there, I was enamored with how it looked on The Frame; it’s truly an incredible viewing experience. Shortly thereafter, I was asked to be included and immediately said yes. Q: How has the Art Store partnership with Samsung impacted your career? It has enabled my art to be consumed by people across the world. Some who have discovered my art through the Art Store have even inquired about collecting physical prints and some of my books. Q: How would you compare displaying your art digitally, such as on The Frame, to more traditional mediums like print or an exhibit? It’s hard to compare because digital displays are obviously very different than traditional prints. In many ways, digital displays like The Frame are better, especially for works native to the digital ecosystem, such as digital art, photography and video. The Matte display on The Frame and the backlighting can render certain artworks in a truly surreal, almost three-dimensional fashion, which is something a traditional print doesn’t do as well. One of the biggest advantages of a digital display is the ability to change the work over time and display different types of mediums. Being able to use the space a television takes up when not in use to showcase art is also a benefit of digital displays. ▲ The Redbud / 20140518 (2014) Future of Digital Art Q: Has there been a change in how you create art as technology becomes increasingly integrated into the art world? Have you noticed a change in the way people consume your art? The changes in technology for monitors and displays have certainly affected how I consider and make my compositions. But in reality, I am a photographic purist and generally do my work with a physical print in mind while understanding that my work may primarily be consumed on screens large and small. I embraced digital technology fairly early and started posting my work on the internet in 1998. The idea of anyone, anywhere in the world, having access to my art is something I have always loved. People having potentially unlimited exposure to my work has always been important to me. We’re certainly going to see AI impact commercial photography, and I think a lot of the types of photographs I used to be commissioned for won’t exist anymore. That said, AI tools can be used to enhance photographs and make the editing process easier, and I am interested in how I might apply that technology to my own projects. ▲ Untitled “River” (2013) Q: Which of your works would you recommend to consumers to display on The Frame? First, I would recommend the Untitled “Diagonal” (2015), which is a fallen tree captured in foggy woods. I had taken numerous photographs of this scene between 2014 and 2017 until the dead tree fell. There is something about this photograph that works particularly well on The Frame. It appears almost three-dimensional. You can read more about this series here. ▲ Untitled “Diagonal” (2015) The Lumberland (2015) looks absolutely unbelievable on The Frame and is the first photograph I ever made in my Lumberland series. The series Lumberland is a time-based project documenting a black walnut tree throughout the seasons. I have taken more than 70 photographs of this landscape over the past eight years. ▲ Lumberland / 20150923 (2015) My Untitled “Path” (2018) also looks fantastic on The Frame because of its mystery. It is a surreal landscape of a branch wrapped in LED lights set next to a seemingly endless stone wall. This is from a series of works where I insert electronic elements into the landscape. ▲ Untitled “Path” (2018) To discover more of Noah Kalina’s artwork, head to the Samsung Art Store in The Frame. Pre-registered visitors will be able to see Samsung’s environmental vision come to life, with the sustainability zone at the booth showcasing the eco-conscious practices applied to digital signage products. These practices are based on the five stages of the product lifecycle — sourcing, production, distribution, using and recycling. Samsung’s 2023 smart signage products (QHC, QMC, QBC) are approximately 40% slimmer than previous models at 28.5mm thickness. Through this, the number of shipping containers required for logistics after production can be reduced by more than 20%1 compared to the previous model. In addition, smart signage products support automatic screen brightness adjustment by adopting an illuminance sensor which reacts to surrounding light conditions, helping users manage their power consumption automatically. Plus, the resin used for the rear covers contains 10% of Post-Consumer Materials (PCM). ▲ The Remote Management function will enable users to simply monitor the number of connected devices and easily manage different devices, as well as remotely control settings such as power ON/OFF and screen brightness. Samsung’s cloud-based MagicINFO solution enhances Remote Management and helps to manage multiple signage displays and a variety of content efficiently. New solutions include real-time power consumption monitoring, timed luminance scheduling, remote brightness adjustment and automatic device management. This comprehensive platform will integrate and connect LCD signage, LED signage and B2B TVs to provide a seamless user experience. Introducing New 2023 Outdoor Signage — Large LED Screens and Small-Sized Displays Unveiled Samsung is announcing new signage products at ISE 2023. Firstly, the company will release its 2023 outdoor LED signage (Model Name: XHB series), built for the sports industry and spectacular landmark locations. The XHB series is available in four models: P6 (6mm pixel pitch), P8, P10 and P16, all of which produce light at an astonishing peak brightness of 8,000 nits, exceptionally clear and stunning picture quality — even when in direct sunlight. Furthermore, the standardized module design of the XHB guarantees flexible design and installation, including Concave (maximum of 2500R curvature), Convex, S shape, Fascia and 90 °L type. With a design twice as thin as the previous model, the XHB series can be installed in a seamless way, with the installation time also reduced by more than half for improved convenience. Furthermore, improved energy efficiency means the XHB reduces power consumption by over 15% compared to its predecessor and can reduce approximately 2,492 tons of CO2 emissions every year, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 sequestered by about 290,000 30-year-old pine trees in one year.2 The XHB series will be available for ordering starting from ISE 2023, with some of the first models already being installed as electronic scoreboards at the home stadiums of globally recognized US Baseball teams, the New York Mets and The World Champion Houston Astros ahead of the 2023 season. Finally, Samsung is introducing a small-sized, 24-inch outdoor signage display (Model Name: OH24B) to cater to the electric vehicle (EV) charger market. As demand for EVs continues to rise, it is important to provide solutions that enable a more connected, enjoyable charging experience while providing upselling opportunities for businesses and retailers. The outdoor signage excels in both durability and outdoor visibility across a wide range of diverse conditions. This high resilience and versatility are provided by peak brightness of 1,500 nits and a slim, metal design, as well as water, dust and liquid resistance (IP66, Ingress Protection) and IK-10 Level glass protection. A high temperature, rigid liquid crystal panel is also applied to provide further durability even under strong sunlight. In addition, the display offers removable Wi-Fi/Bluetooth accessories, which can optimize the receiving rate based on installation conditions. Finally, the small signage boasts unparalleled energy efficiency with the industry’s lowest power consumption3 (a maximum of 90W) above 20-inches, perfect for an EV charging station which requires 24/7 operation and information delivery. New Kiosk and Flip Pro’s Exclusive Solution Deliver Enhanced Device Compatibility Samsung is also announcing the latest model, “Samsung Kiosk” Windows version (Model Name: KMC-W). In addition to the existing model operating Tizen (OS), “Samsung Kiosk” Windows version is compatible with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise OS to expand customer choices. This new Kiosk adopts Intel’s 11th generation Intel Core Processor. It is equipped with 8GB DRAM and 256GB SSD, providing fast processing and ample storage space to meet the fast-evolving industry demands beyond healthcare, hospitality and retail. The company will introduce a new solution, exclusive for the “Samsung Flip,” meeting the demand of both educators and businesses to be connected to various devices simultaneously. It enables users to bring the content or applications in their PC to the Flip by connecting a PC with the Flip. Especially, users can write over content brought from their PC on the screen of Flip and share in real-time. The new solution enhances usability for remote work and provides a seamless work environment by allowing users to optimize and utilize the screen to connect with other device screens. Users can access these masterpieces via The Frame, Samsung’s lifestyle TV with an enhanced Matte Display that reduces light reflection. With this newest feature, The Frame allows users to view brilliant pieces of art from a catalogue of thousands right on their screen using Art Mode. To further accessibility to and diversity within art, Samsung has been partnering with numerous museums, galleries and art collectives, with the latest Artlife Matters and Samsung Art Store partnership being one of them. Together, Artlife Matters and Samsung Art Store have been providing consumers with a unique and inspiring selection of artworks by Ghanaian and African artists, giving viewers who may not have been able to view the works in person a chance to experience the art in the comfort of their homes. Samsung Newsroom sat down with Eric Agyare, the Founder and Project Director at Artlife Matters, to discuss how the organization and its partnership with Samsung Art Store has transformed the perception of art and its role in enhancing diversity and accessibility for artists in Ghana and Africa. ▲ Artists at the Artist Seminar held by Artlife Matters in 2022 Expanding Opportunities for Art Q: Can you tell us a bit about Artlife Matters and what inspired you to pursue a partnership with Samsung Art Store? Artlife Matters is an art-influential organization that looks to foster collaboration and partnership opportunities that showcase practicing and upcoming artists within the creative arts space. Due to limited opportunities and resources, at times it can be difficult for artists to reach their full potential. In partnering with the Samsung Art Store, we are able to provide a platform that allows artists the opportunity to experience art from a worldwide lens. Q: How has the reception of your partnership with Samsung been from members of Artlife Matters and its artists? The reception from artists has been positive. The exposure and revenue model of the Art Store platform has solved significant career challenges, and our artists now have the peace of mind to keep doing what they love without concerns for livelihood. To date, we currently have artwork submissions from six African countries, allowing consumers to truly enjoy the diverse artwork Artlife Matters provide. Q: How has your experience working with Samsung affected consumers’ perception of African art? The partnership has also positively affected consumers’ preferences, exposing them to the unknown aesthetics of our continent. As a result, I believe users of The Frame are more enlightened on the new African narrative than ever before. During our Artist Seminar held in December 2022, Artlife Matters recorded that most of our listed artists on that platform had been contacted by users of The Frame. Some conversations are leading to new projects as well. Creating Diverse and Accessible Environments in Art Q: As an art-influential organization that celebrates and promotes art as a form of expression, what are some of the ways the organization helps to address societal issues and inspire a creative and inclusive society? Artlife Matters has been implementing an art-based capacity building project called “Artitude”, which aims to expand the possibilities of the creative art space. Through workshops, internships and mentorships, we have engaged over 4,395 young creatives in senior high schools across Ghana, showing them the social, cultural and economic possibilities in the creative art space while also promoting the importance of art. Our goal is to celebrate and highlight art as a social, cultural and economic development tool. The school and community projects we run are created to inspire and shape creatives to reach their vast potential within the art industry. Our goal is to become a pan-African organization with an art ecosystem that allows new and existing creatives to exchange and implement ideas that shape society. Q: What role do you see technology playing in bridging the accessibility gap for consumers and artists in the coming years? We believe the effort in democratizing the art industry through technology is increasing the demand for creative goods. Through technology, art can become accessible to the right consumers and offer more exposure to artists’ work. The dream of having a viable career in art can easily be made possible for young adults living in remote areas in Ghana. Illustrating the Vibrancy and Richness Art Q: What are some of the unique artistic elements that define Ghanaian art and the newest works in the Art Store? Ghana is increasingly becoming the hub for contemporary African art. Our vibrant colors, unique way of representing blackness and the authenticity of the Ghanaian narrate now have the world’s attention. We use every opportunity to advocate and demonstrate art’s social, cultural and economic value in Ghana and beyond. Artlife Matters is focused on creating and managing a vibrant art space that influences positive community behaviors, as depicted in the Kolorscape art piece. Q: Of the newest works in the Art Store, which piece would you recommend for users to display on The Frame? To showcase the amazing and vibrant works from Artlife Matters and its artists, I’d recommend that consumers display the works of art outlined below on The Frame. ▲ Kolorscapes (2021) by Dela Aemaga(Becké) Dela Aemaga is a contemporary artist. His works spur dialogue on race, society, culture, religion and politics. Dela firmly believes art validates perception, and this is how he perceives the future of the Accra creative community in this masterpiece. ▲ Melanin Lisa by Elkanah Kwadwo Mpesum (el Carna) Elkanah Kwadwo Mpesum is a professional illustrator with an edge to narrate authentic African stories. His version of the “Mona Lisa” is a tribute to the beauty and majesty of black womanhood. ▲ She Snap by Manzi Leon Manzi Leon is a self-taught surreal visual and digital artist who loves the impasto painting style because it gives him exciting energy to see visible brush strokes converging on a canvas to form a masterpiece that expresses the thoughts and feelings of women in his community. This painting depicts how we get happiness and the power to stick to what motivates us. To see more of Artlife Matters’ artwork, head to the Samsung Art Store in The Frame. View the full article

  22. Samsung Electronics today announced that its 2023 Neo QLED1 and Lifestyle TV2 lineups received the ‘Circadian Rhythm Display’ certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE), a leading electrical engineering certification institute in Germany. The certification underscores Samsung’s commitment to developing technology and products designed with consumers top of mind. ▲ (From left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Deputy Head of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Sven Ohrke(Öhrke), Management of Marketing and Sales at VDE Institute. This certification recognizes that Samsung TV’s Eye Comfort mode provides an optimal viewing experience for consumers spending more time indoors by automatically balancing light exposure and color temperature to mimic natural outdoor light. The circadian rhythm has a cycle of inhibiting melatonin secretion for dynamic activities during the day while activating its release for a comfortable sleep at night. Melatonin is a hormone known to help you sleep well. VDE’s certification validates the benefits of Eye Comfort mode on users’ circadian rhythm by measuring circadian stimulus at different illuminance levels and assessing the impact on melatonin suppression. The certification process complies with the Circadian Stimulus method based on the research results of the Lighting Research Center in the U.S. This is one of many verifications Samsung TVs have received representing ongoing efforts to put users and their experience front and center of product design. Previously, Samsung TVs have received ‘Eye Care’ certification from VDE and ‘Glare-Free’ validation from UL, along with ‘Pantone Validated’ and ‘SkinTone Validated’ certifications from Pantone, both signifying that certified Samsung screens satisfy the organization’s color accuracy standards. In 2023, the SmartThings Zigbee & Matter Thread One-Chip Module will be directly built into Samsung products. And for the ultimate connected device experience, SmartThings automatically syncs devices for easier control of not just Samsung devices but also third-party appliances and IoT devices1 for seamless connections. Broadening Viewing Options With MICRO LED and Samsung OLED The 2023 MICRO LED lineup offers new models ranging from 50 to 140-inches2 to provide consumers with a breadth of options for unparalleled picture quality and screen experience. Thanks to its modular nature, MICRO LED is not bound by shape, ratio and size, making it completely customizable to fit a consumer’s desired set up. In addition, it comes without bezels, so regardless of configuration, the boundary between screen and real life is seamless. And to provide consumers with even more viewing options, Samsung’s 2023 OLED lineup is now available in 55, 65 and the new ultra-large 77-inch models. Samsung’s latest OLED lineup comes with Quantum Dot technology that has been developed for Samsung’s Neo QLEDs as well as Neural Quantum Processors to retain OLED technology’s core strengths while simultaneously improving limitations in its brightness and color representation. The expanded lineup comes with a 144Hz refresh rate and all of Samsung’s smart features, including Samsung Gaming Hub. And for the first time on an OLED TV, Samsung OLEDs come with AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro certification for the ultimate OLED gaming experience. Finally, to expand viewing options, Samsung offers Samsung TV Plus on all of its Smart TV lineup. The free ad-supported TV (FAST) and video-on-demand service deliver over 1,800 channels globally, including over 50 owned & operated channels, reaching 24 countries and 465 million devices globally across the company’s TV and mobile devices. Everyday Sustainability With Samsung Screens In line with the latest environmental strategy announced in 2022, Samsung is consistently working with partners and customers to be eco-conscious, providing a broader impact throughout the product’s lifecycle. As a result, each step is made more eco-conscious, from making the manufacturing process more efficient to reducing packaging and changing how consumers use their products. Recycled Materials: For the 2023 lineup, Samsung will replace 20% of the bracket parts used for the SolarCell Remote with recycled ocean-bound plastic. In addition, the main parts of the power board use recycled aluminum cans and copper, replacing approximately 12% of the original materials used. Reducing Manufacturing Impact: Samsung designed a light-weight injection mold that requires fewer materials, with a structure that can be repurposed, bringing down the overall energy consumption and raw materials needed for production. AI Energy Saving Mode: Through SmartThings, Samsung’s 2023 TVs support AI Energy Saving Mode, helping users save more energy in new ways. SmartThings Energy Service on TVs helps reduce carbon footprint of connected devices with simple changes, such as automatic switches to energy saving mode on specific devices when not in use. And with 3D Map View, it will be easier to get a holistic overview of connected devices and put energy saving ideas into practice. Eco-Packaging: In 2023, Samsung Eco-Packaging will come with minimal print, so less ink is consumed in its production, and Samsung will use paper tape to reduce the use of plastic in its packaging. Additionally, package sizes will be reduced to lower overall carbon emissions. Multidimensional Soundscape and Audio Quality With AI A premium screen experience would only be complete with ultra-immersive audio. While Samsung TVs come with impressive built-in speakers, they also have powerful audio features and devices to enhance the viewing experience for something truly cinematic. AI Sound Remastering: In 2023, Samsung’s flagship TV and soundbar offer Sound Remastering, which utilizes AI to remaster each sound object to ensure voices are clear, environmental sounds are totally enveloping and that each component is just the right volume. New Soundbars: In addition to the flagship soundbar, HW-Q990C, with 11.1.4 channel sound supporting Dolby Atmos, the ultra-slim HW-S800B offers powerful immersive sound in Dolby Atmos from a 3.1.2 channel device that is just 40mm tall and 38mm deep. It is easily placed with any TV and still offers clear sound with punchy bass. Q-Symphony: A new iteration of harmony between the TV and soundbar, 2023 new Q-Symphony will provide vastly evolved sound for which the soundbar taps into the TV’s Neural Processing Unit to analyze audio signals and process each sound for more detail than ever before.
